410 Medical, based in Durham, NC, is developing and distributing innovative products that help improve resuscitation of critically ill patients. 410’s products are designed to enable clinicians to more effectively and efficiently respond to patients with septic shock, hemorrhagic shock and other conditions that require controlled, rapid volume resuscitation.
Position Summary:
The HR Manager is the company's first dedicated HR professional and will serve as a true generalist and trusted advisor to leadership and employees alike. This hands-on role owns the full HR lifecycle — from talent acquisition and onboarding through performance management and offboarding — while also supporting day-to-day office operations in a lean start-up environment. The ideal candidate brings both the strategic mindset of a business partner and the roll-up-your-sleeves mentality required to build HR programs from the ground up.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Talent Acquisition & Workforce Planning
- Partner with department leaders to develop and execute a talent strategy that supports the company's growth.
- Own full-cycle recruiting for W-2 roles: job postings, sourcing, candidate screening,interview coordination, offer letters, and background checks.
- Manage onboarding programs that accelerate new-hire productivity and reinforce company culture.
- Coordinate with commercial teams on the engagement and administration of 1099 clinical educators, ensuring proper classification and compliance.
Payroll & Benefits Administration
- Administer bi-weekly payroll in partnership with the Director of Finance, ensuring accuracy and compliance with federal and state regulations.
- Manage employee benefits programs (health, dental, vision, 401(k), etc.), including annual open enrollment, vendor relationships, and employee communications.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for benefits inquiries and resolve employee issues with carriers and third-party administrators.
- Maintain HRIS data integrity and generate workforce reporting as needed.
Performance Management & Manager Coaching
- Design and administer the performance review cycle, including goal-setting frameworks, mid-year check-ins, and annual reviews.
- Coach managers on effective performance conversations, feedback delivery, and documentation practices.
- Support the development of career ladders and competency frameworks suited to early-stage company needs.
- Identify learning and development needs and source cost-effective solutions —workshops, e-learning, or coaching — for individual contributors and managers.
- Partner with leadership to address employee relations matters, performance improvement plans, and conflict resolution.
HR Compliance & Policy
- Maintain the employee handbook and ensure policies comply with applicable federal,state, and local employment laws (FLSA, ADA, FMLA, EEO, NC OSHA, etc.).
- Manage personnel records, I-9 documentation, and other required HR files inaccordance with retention requirements.
- Ensure compliant classification of employees and independent contractors.
- Oversee required compliance training, including harassment prevention and workplace safety.
- Serve as the primary HR administrator within the company’s current Professional Employer Organization (PEO) arrangement with Rippling.
- Oversee the workers’ compensation program in collaboration with the Director of Finance, including carrier relationship management, claims administration, annual policy renewal, and ensuring compliance with all relevant state workers’ compensation requirements.
IT Coordination
- Coordinate IT vendors to ensure timely hardware provisioning, standard business applications and access setup during onboarding and de-provisioning uponoffboarding.
- Administer cybersecurity awareness and compliance training programs in partnership with the IT vendor, tracking completion across all employees and contractors.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of progressive HR experience, including at least 3 years in a HR Business Partner or Senior Generalist role
- Experience as a sole HR practitioner or 'department of one'; with a demonstrated ability to independently manage the full HR function across a growing organization.
- Working knowledge of federal and North Carolina employment law and HR compliance requirements.
- Proven ability to coach managers and influence without authority in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills — written and verbal.
- Proficiency with HRIS platforms, ATS tools, and standard office productivity software.
Preferred Skills
- Experience supporting a business in a regulated industry such as life sciences, medical device, or other regulated industries.
- Prior exposure to 1099 contractor management and independent contractor compliance.
- Experience in a start-up or high-growth company where HR programs were being built or scaled.
- PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, or SHRM-SCP certification.
- Familiarity with cybersecurity compliance training platforms (e.g., KnowBe4,Proofpoint) and IT onboarding workflows.
