Radiation Shielding Engineer

About Aalo Atomics

Aalo Atomics is pioneering a new era in clean energy with factory-fabricated microreactors designed to deliver affordable, scalable, and reliable nuclear power. Our mission is to make nuclear energy globally accessible, starting with the Aalo-1, a 10 MWe reactor leveraging cutting-edge safety, modularity, and efficiency. Based in Austin, TX, we’re rapidly growing as we work to deploy the world’s first fleet of advanced microreactors. Join us and help revolutionize energy for a sustainable future.

About the Role

As a member of the Shielding team, you will characterize radiation sources and develop radiation shielding designs for advanced reactor systems. You will apply state-of-the-art analysis methods and computational tools to evaluate radiation source terms from fission, activation, and radioactive decay, and develop shielding solutions that meet safety, operational, regulatory, and customer requirements.

Working as an integral member of the neutronics design teams, you will perform radiation transport analyses, develop shielding configurations, and support system integration across a variety of deployment scenarios. You will collaborate closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to balance performance, safety, manufacturability, constructability, and cost throughout the design lifecycle.

The ideal candidate combines strong technical expertise with a practical engineering mindset and enjoys solving complex problems in a fast-paced environment. You have experience applying nuclear engineering principles to real-world challenges and contributing across multiple phases of a project's lifecycle, from concept development and design through manufacturing, installation, operation, and decommissioning. While you may possess deep expertise in a particular area, you are comfortable working across disciplines, assuming responsibilities where needed, and helping build processes and solutions within a growing organization.

Roles and Responsibilities

In addition to finding and applying creative engineering solutions, you will develop and provide expertise in a subset of the following:

  • Perform radiation shielding design and analysis for reactor, fuel handling, and site systems.
  • Develop and execute trade studies evaluating shielding materials, geometries, and deployment strategies.
  • Develop neutronics simulations to characterize neutron and photon source terms during operation, maintenance, and accident conditions.
  • Optimize shielding designs to balance radiation protection, manufacturability, cost, and deployment requirements.
  • Develop technical reports and safety basis documentation supporting design, licensing, and operational activities.
  • Ensure analysis methods, software tools, and technical products comply with the Aalo quality assurance program.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Nuclear Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, or a related technical discipline.
  • 2+ years of experience in radiation shielding analysis, radiation transport, or related nuclear engineering disciplines.
  • Proficiency with radiation transport tools such as MCNP, ADVANTG, SCALE/KENO, OpenMC, or similar methods.
  • Demonstrated understanding of regulatory requirements, shielding design principles, radiation transport methods, and engineering design practices.

Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills, enthusiasm for problem solving, and desire to modernize nuclear design and operation
  • The ability to work with a multidisciplinary team to have the shielding design be integrated into the overall reactor design
  • Strong project management skills and effective communication of technical concepts across multi-disciplinary teams
  • Broad knowledge of nuclear interactions with material selections, especially for radiation shielding applications
  • Knowledge of radiation protection principles, dose assessment methodologies, and ALARA practices.
  • Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively across reactor physics, mechanical, systems, operations, licensing, and manufacturing organizations
  • Track record of taking technical ownership and delivering high-impact engineering results in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience using AI tools to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of engineering workflows
  • Experience working under NQA-1-compliant software quality assurance programs and procedures, including software qualification, and commercial-grade dedication
  • Working knowledge of scientific programming and data analysis tools, such as Python or Perl.

Additional Requirements:

  • Ability to respond to occasional time-sensitive technical issues and support project milestones requiring additional effort during critical phases of design and deployment.
  • Ability to travel to regulatory and fabrication locations as needed
  • Based in the United States
  • Willing to work on-site in Austin, TX
