Assistant Superintendent – Development & Infrastructure

 

Job Summary
The Assistant Superintendent supports the planning, coordination, and execution of land development and infrastructure construction projects. This role oversees field operations, ensures work is completed safely and according to project specifications, and works closely with the Senior PM, subcontractors, inspectors and vendors The position requires someone who is comfortable performing physical labor, operating heavy equipment, and solving field challenges as they arise.


Work to be performed across East Alabama and West Georgia.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the Superintendent in managing daily field operations for residential, commercial, and infrastructure development projects.
  • Coordinate grading, excavation, utility installation, roadway construction, drainage, and site preparation activities.
  • Operate heavy equipment as needed, including excavators, skid steers, trenchers and compactors.
  • Perform hands-on labor, including site cleanup, silt fence installation, seeding, mulching and other construction tasks.
  • Read and interpret construction plans, specifications, blueprints, and grading plans.
  • Verify layout and elevations using surveying equipment such as GPS, laser levels, and total stations.
  • Coordinate with surveyors to ensure accurate staking, grading, and utility placement.
  • Monitor project quality, productivity, and compliance with project schedules.
  • Ensure adherence to OSHA and company safety standards.
  • Inspect equipment daily and coordinate maintenance and repairs.
  • Communicate effectively with project managers, subcontractors, inspectors, suppliers, and property owners.

 Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; construction management or related education preferred.
  • 3-7 years of experience in site development, heavy civil construction, or infrastructure projects.
  • Experience with earthwork, utilities, grading, storm drainage, road construction, and land development.
  • Proficiency operating heavy construction equipment.
  • Knowledge of construction surveying methods and layout procedures preferred.
  • Ability to read blueprints, engineering plans, and project specifications.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Valid driver's license; CDL is a plus.

 Physical Requirements

  • Ability to perform strenuous physical labor in varying weather conditions.
  • Lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
  • Stand, walk, bend, climb, and kneel for extended periods.
  • Operate heavy machinery safely and efficiently.
  • This position is ideal for someone who enjoys balancing field supervision with hands-on construction work and has experience in land development, infrastructure projects, surveying, and heavy equipment operation.
