Who Are We?
At CMLS Financial, we strike a unique balance: the financial strength of a 50-year industry leader with the energy of a dynamic, fast-paced firm.
- Growth & Exposure: With over $45 billion in assets under administration, our "booming" business means you gain high-level exposure and real opportunities for career advancement.
- Supportive Culture: We are professional yet enjoyable. We provide a challenging environment supported by a team that wants you to succeed.
- National Reach: Work with Canada’s most prominent banks, investment managers, and pension funds from a platform with offices coast to coast.
We’re looking for a Manager, Residential Underwriting who is as comfortable diving into a complex credit file as they are mentoring a team through one. Here, you aren’t just managing a queue; you are the technical anchor for your underwriters, helping them navigate the "grey areas" of residential lending where common sense matters as much as the guidelines. You’ll lead in an environment that values your expertise, grants you autonomy and partnership.
Where You’ll Make An Impact:
- Pipeline Management: Oversee the distribution and flow of applications across the team 7 underwriters to ensure service standards are met and the workload remains balanced.
- Complex Adjudication: Review high-complexity files and escalations, making final credit decisions that balance risk requirements with a practical approach to lending.
- Technical Mentorship: Provide the real-time coaching and training your team needs to sharpen their credit intuition and move beyond basic checklists.
- Sales Collaboration: Maintain an open line of communication with Regional Managers and brokers to address concerns, manage expectations, and find solutions for new business.
- Quality Assurance: Conduct regular file reviews and audits to ensure the shop’s work is accurate, compliant, and meets all internal and regulatory standards.
- Operational Improvement: Identify friction points in the underwriting process and work with leadership to implement practical changes that make the workflow smoother.
What We Value:
- Five (5) years of experience in residential underwriting.
- Three (3) years of experience managing underwriters and believe the best results come from a team that feels empowered, well-trained, and mentored.
- You excel at making high-stakes credit decisions and handling escalations efficiently, never letting a busy pipeline compromise your clarity or judgment.
- You view underwriting as a partnership; you work with brokers and the sales team to see if a deal can be restructured to fit within guidelines rather than just pointing out the flaws.
- You don’t just accept "how it’s always been done"; you’re the first to point out a clunky process and suggest a fix that actually works for the team.
- Active registration as a Submortgage Broker with the BCFSA.
- Bilingual in English and French will be considered an asset.
Supporting Your Life at CMLS:
- Health & Wellness: Comprehensive insurance (Drug, Vision, Dental) & Health and Wellness Spending Accounts.
- Mental Support: 24/7 unlimited access to telemedicine, EAP, and mental health services for you and your family.
- Time Off: 4 weeks paid vacation, plus personal/sick days and all statutory holidays.
- Future Planning: RRSP Matching Program to help you build long-term wealth.
- Family Support: Robust Maternity and Parental Leave Top-Up programs.
- Professional Growth: Education reimbursement, mentoring, and continuous training.
