Position Summary

The Maintenance & Facilities Manager plays a vital role in supporting the mission of the Humane Society of North Texas (HSNT) by ensuring all shelter and ranch facilities and equipment are safe, functional, and welcoming for animals, staff, volunteers, and the community. This position oversees the care and upkeep of buildings, vehicles, barns, pastures, and infrastructure, helping create an environment where animals can heal, thrive, and find permanent homes.

As part of a nonprofit organization, this role requires a hands-on leader who is resourceful, collaborative, and committed to maximizing impact through efficient use of funds, materials, and volunteer support.

Key Responsibilities

Mission-Driven Facilities & Equipment Management

• Maintain all shelter and ranch facilities, including kennels, barns, offices, and medical spaces
• Ensure all company vehicles, trailers and equipment are properly licensed, inspected, stored and maintained
• Ensure all environments meet high standards of cleanliness, safety, and animal welfare 
• Support a welcoming and professional appearance for visitors, adopters, and donors 

Grounds & Ranch Operations

• In collaboration with the Director of Equine, ensure maintenance of pastures, fencing, turnout areas, and access roads is managed in a timely and safe manner
• Ensure safe and secure containment for equines and other animals 
• Ensure shelter grounds are properly maintained and safe for animals, staff and visitors

Preventative Maintenance & Sustainability

• Develop and implement preventative maintenance plans to extend the life of facilities and equipment 
• Identify cost-effective, sustainable solutions for repairs and improvements 
• Support environmentally responsible practices (water use, waste management, etc.) 

Team & Volunteer Leadership

• Supervise maintenance staff and coordinate skilled volunteers or community service workers for projects 
• Provide training, guidance, and oversight to ensure work is completed safely and effectively 
• Foster a collaborative, mission-focused team environment 

Vendor & Donor Engagement

• Coordinate with contractors, service providers, and in-kind donors 
• Obtain bids and manage projects within budget constraints 
• Help identify opportunities for donated materials, services, or community partnerships 

Safety & Compliance

• Ensure compliance with all applicable safety, health, and animal welfare regulations 
• Maintain OSHA standards and organizational safety protocols 
• Assist in developing and executing emergency preparedness and response plans 

Budget Stewardship

• Manage maintenance and facilities budget with a focus on responsible nonprofit stewardship 
• Track expenses and prioritize projects based on organizational needs and available resources 
• Maintain inventory of tools, equipment, and supplies 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Technical Knowledge

• Working knowledge of general maintenance trades (plumbing, electrical, carpentry, HVAC, welding) 
• Understanding of ranch and equine facility infrastructure, including fencing, irrigation, and shelter systems 
• Familiarity with farm/ranch equipment and maintenance tools 
• Knowledge of sanitation and biosecurity practices in animal care settings 

Skills

• Strong problem-solving skills with a proactive, solution-oriented mindset 
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic, nonprofit environment
• Ability to represent the Humane Society of North Texas in a professional manner in all situations with the public, volunteers, and staff
• Ability to read, write and communicate effectively

Required Licensing or Certifications

• Must have a valid Texas drivers’ license and qualify as an insurable drive on company insurance plan
• Must be able to drive a truck pulling a large adoption, equine or flatbed trailer

Physical Demands

• Regular exposure to animal odors, diseases, possible contagious conditions, bites, scratches, animal waste and moderate noise levels.

• While performing the duties of this job this position may be exposed to animal odors or airborne particles.  
• Exposure to chemicals and chemical fumes.
• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
• Position will both work indoors and outdoors with exposure to elements.

Working Conditions

• The individual performing this job may be required to work more than 8 hours in a day or 40 hours in a week.
