Staff Engineer

The health insurance and benefits industry is undergoing rapid digital transformation. Today, most people choose, enroll, and utilize their benefits not by calling insurance carriers or reviewing paper forms, but by using HR and benefits software. Behind the scenes, Ideon’s APIs make this modern benefits experience possible. We’re powering an entire industry forward, delivering the speed, transparency, and efficiency that today’s consumers expect.

About Engineering at Ideon

Ideon has built the first multi-carrier, end-to-end quoting, enrollment and member management API solution for Health Insurance and Employee Benefits. With adoption from all of the major medical carriers and overwhelming traction from end-user-facing platforms, our Quoting and Enrollments APIs are set for massive growth and industry disruption.

At its core, Ideon is a technology and data company. The Ideon engineering team plays a central role in building APIs that are transforming the health insurance industry. We're an agile team that seeks to constantly improve our skills and process. We build high quality code through TDD, pair programming, code review, static analysis and documented best practices. We ensure we're building the right thing in collaboration with the Product team through product inceptions, architecture reviews and roadmap prioritization. We're looking for engineers who are excited about working on hard problems and contributing to our shared culture.

Ideon is a fully remote company. For this role we have a strong preference for U.S.-based candidates, since the work benefits from familiarity with the American health insurance and healthcare ecosystem. This role reports into an Engineering Manager.

In this role you will:

  • Own significant projects end-to-end, from technical design through implementation and rollout — the kind of ownership the team can rely on.
  • Set technical direction across our healthcare data platform and member management solution — our Ruby on Rails APIs (including newer Axum-based services) and our Rust data-processing pipelines.
  • Have a high degree of autonomy and influence on the culture and direction of the technical organization.
  • Apply strong technical judgment and taste to how we build — including steering AI-assisted development effectively, where knowing what good looks like is what turns those tools into real leverage.
  • Raise the bar on engineering standards, processes, and code quality across the team.
  • Mentor engineers and serve as a technical leader others look to for direction.

We'd love to hear from you if you:

  • Care deeply about your software development craft and consistently write high-quality code.
  • Bring 10+ years of software engineering experience, including a track record of owning substantial projects from design through delivery.
  • Are proficient in both Ruby and Rust. Our APIs are primarily Ruby on Rails (with newer Axum-based services), and our large-scale data pipelines are built in Rust.
  • Have designed, built, and maintained production APIs.
  • Have designed, built, and maintained large-scale data pipelines.
  • Have the technical taste and judgment to use AI-assisted development tools well — treating them as a force multiplier while holding a high bar for quality.
  • Thrive in highly collaborative engineering teams and value transparent, positive communication.
