Software Engineering Summer Intern

Don't just write code this summer. Build something that works in the real world.

Want to spend your summer writing software that actually controls hardware, solving real engineering problems and seeing your work put into use?

At Kwetta, we're tackling one of the world's biggest electrification challenges. We're developing technology that unlocks the power of high-voltage grids to revolutionise EV charging, with our solutions already making an impact across New Zealand, Australia and Europe.

We're looking for a talented Software Engineering student who wants more than a typical internship. You'll have a real project to own, experienced engineers to learn from and the freedom to figure things out.

Your summer challenge? Turn an existing manual hardware tester into a fully automated testing solution.

Working alongside our R&D and Operations teams, you'll get hands-on with real hardware and develop the software that makes it all work.

You'll:

  • Develop Python software interfaces that communicate with and control hardware.
  • Turn manual testing processes into reliable, repeatable automated tests.
  • Build or integrate systems to capture and log test results.
  • Explore how AI and emerging tools could make testing smarter and more efficient.
  • Test, troubleshoot and commission your solution, then hand it over for ongoing use.

By the end of summer, you'll have delivered working software that makes a genuine difference to how Kwetta tests its technology.

What We’re Looking For

We're after someone who's technically capable, curious and driven to see things through.

You'll bring:

  • Third- or fourth-year study in Software Engineering, Computer Science or a related field.
  • Strong Python programming skills and solid software development fundamentals.
  • Experience building and debugging software through study, work or personal projects.
  • An interest in hardware integration, AI and automation.
  • A practical, resourceful approach to solving problems, with the confidence to experiment and ask questions.
  • A team-first attitude, openness to feedback and the drive to finish what you start.

You don't need to know everything. But you do need to be someone who enjoys figuring things out and takes pride in delivering something that works.

What You Get

  • A real project, not busywork. Own a meaningful piece of engineering from start to finish.
  • Hands-on technical experience. Build software that interacts with real hardware, not just a screen.
  • Freedom to learn and grow. Work alongside experienced engineers who'll support you while giving you space to find solutions.
  • Work that matters. Help improve the technology accelerating the world's transition to electrification.
  • A great team. Join smart, grounded people who share knowledge, challenge ideas and back each other.
  • Summer in Hawke's Bay. Beaches, sunshine, outdoor adventures and a lifestyle that's hard to beat.
