Staff Mechanical Engineer

Performance Drone Works (PDW) is building the next generation of tactical robotic systems used across defense, national security, and public safety missions. As we expand into Denver, we are building a new center of engineering excellence to design our new category of tactical robotic systems and the industrial capacity to deliver them, bringing decisive airpower into the hands of every operator. We are not here to make promises; we are here to deliver real systems with real capabilities for real missions.

You will join a team of operators, engineers, and builders who solve hard problems with humility and focus. We design and produce multi-mission aerial systems that operators trust to perform in real-world conditions, reliably, repeatedly, and at scale. Our approach is grounded in operator-centered design, rapid iteration from field use, and U.S.-based manufacturing. We operate by a clear set of values: Mission First, Aim Farther, Own It, Win Together. This is how we build advantage and how we help protect our service members, our communities, and our country.

What You'll Do

Our Staff Mechanical Engineer will:

  • Provide technical leadership across multiple mechanical subsystems and product areas.
  • Define and uphold mechanical engineering standards, ensuring consistency and quality across the hardware portfolio.
  • Architect complex mechanical systems as a recognized technical authority, driving design decisions with long-term manufacturability and reliability in mind.
  • Collaborate with engineering and product leadership to shape the hardware development roadmap.
  • Mentor engineers at all levels, investing in their technical growth and the overall capability of the team.
  • Lead design reviews, FMECAs, and structured engineering processes that meet or exceed industry standards.
  • Identify and resolve systemic hardware challenges that span subsystems or products.
  • Support field operations and serve as a technical escalation point for complex mechanical issues.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field, with 7+ years of professional mechanical design experience, including experience in a technical leadership capacity.
  • Expert-level SolidWorks skills with deep experience designing complex, production-grade mechanical assemblies in demanding environments.
  • Proven track record of architecting and delivering high-performance electromechanical systems through full development lifecycle.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of high-volume manufacturing processes including injection molding (insert molding, two-shot), sheet metal, die-casting, powdered metal, and MIM.
  • Expert-level command of DFM/DFA/DFT and demonstrated experience driving designs into scalable production.
  • Strong experience with FEA and CFD tools; ability to set analysis standards and review others' work.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to influence and align stakeholders across disciplines.

Preferred

  • Background or hands-on experience with UAVs, aircraft, robotics, or autonomous systems through a full development lifecycle.
  • Experience qualifying and managing suppliers for specialized components such as high-torque brushless motors or custom optics.
  • Strong familiarity with industry standards such as AS9100, DO-160, and FAA Part 107.
  • Experience with advanced materials including carbon fiber composites, high-strength polymers for additive manufacturing, and lightweight alloys.
  • Track record of designing for automated or semi-automated assembly in a high-volume production environment.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Ability to sit, stand, bend, reach, climb, and move about regularly throughout the day and lift / carry up to 25 pounds. Must have manual dexterity to operate standard machine shop equipment and standard office equipment. Must be physically capable of tolerating loud noise, heat, cold, dust, or chemicals (with PPE).

Work Environment

This position typically operates in a standard office setting and manufacturing environment. This role requires use of standard office and manufacturing equipment and may involve exposure to loud noise, heat, cold, dust, or chemicals (with PPE) and may require occasional travel to test sites/customer locations/supplier facilities. This position may have exposure to outdoor weather conditions, noise, and non-climate-controlled environments. May require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) depending on the environment. This is a fast-paced work environment and requires cross-departmental collaboration with independent and team-based responsibilities.

ITAR Requirement

In compliance with International Traffic Arms Regulations (ITAR), candidates must be U.S. Citizens, U.S. Permanent Residents (Green Card holders) or individuals granted asylee/refugee status as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3).
