Build practical software. Solve real data problems.

Are you a software developer who enjoys solving problems, building useful applications and turning complex data into practical business solutions?

Pinnacle Investment Management is looking for a capable, curious and motivated Software Engineer – Python & Data to join our Data & Business Analytics team in Brisbane.

This is an opportunity to develop real-world software and data solutions that help business teams work more efficiently, access better information and automate processes. You will work across Python development, SQL, data pipelines, web applications, dashboards and emerging AI-enabled solutions, with opportunities to develop your skills across a modern data technology environment.

We're looking for someone who combines sound technical fundamentals with analytical thinking, initiative and a genuine desire to build software that works reliably and delivers value.

You may be a recent graduate with strong practical project experience or an early-career developer ready to take the next step. What matters most is your ability to apply your technical knowledge, solve problems and continue learning.

What you'll do

Working with business users and technical colleagues, you will help design, build and improve software and data solutions across the Group.

Develop software and applications

  • Build and maintain Python applications using appropriate libraries, including pandas.
  • Write clean, maintainable code and use Git for source control.
  • Develop and integrate APIs and web application functionality.
  • Translate business requirements into practical technical solutions, using wireframes or prototypes where helpful.

Build reliable data solutions

  • Develop SQL queries and work with SQL Server databases.
  • Build and maintain ETL/ELT data pipelines to extract, transform, validate and deliver data.
  • Improve data quality through cleansing, validation and more consistent data collection.
  • Investigate data issues, troubleshoot failures and improve the reliability of existing processes.

Create useful business tools

  • Develop dashboards, forms and self-service data tools that help business users access and understand information.
  • Work with stakeholders to understand their needs, agree on solutions and deliver useful outcomes.
  • Apply data analysis and visualisation techniques to support business decision-making.

Automate and innovate

  • Identify opportunities to automate repetitive work and improve existing business processes.
  • Contribute to the integration of AI into business workflows, including solutions using Databricks.
  • Help implement, test and improve new applications, integrations and data capabilities.

Support quality and reliability

  • Follow sound development practices, including testing, debugging, documentation and version control.
  • Contribute to secure, well-managed and reliable applications and data processes.
  • Help investigate defects, monitor processes and improve solutions over time.

What we're looking for

Essential capabilities

We are looking for candidates who can demonstrate:

  • Practical Python programming ability — through employment, internships, university projects, personal projects or other relevant work.
  • Sound SQL fundamentals — including the ability to query, combine and transform relational data.
  • Analytical problem-solving — the ability to break down a problem, investigate its cause and develop a practical solution.
  • Software development discipline — an appreciation of readable code, debugging, testing, source control and maintainability.
  • Initiative and ownership — the willingness to take responsibility for tasks, work through problems and ask for help when appropriate.
  • Communication and collaboration — the ability to understand requirements, explain technical issues clearly and work constructively with business users and colleagues.
  • A commitment to learning — curiosity about new technologies and a desire to develop stronger software engineering and data skills.

You should be comfortable explaining something you have built, the technical decisions you made and the contribution you personally delivered.

Desirable experience

Experience or familiarity with any of the following would be advantageous:

  • Microsoft Azure and SQL Server.
  • Databricks and AI-enabled applications.
  • ETL/ELT development and data pipeline orchestration, including Apache Airflow.
  • REST APIs and web application development using technologies such as FastAPI or Flask.
  • Data analysis and visualisation, including dashboard development.
  • JavaScript or Vue.js.
  • Linux, SFTP and data integration.
  • Database design, data modelling and data quality practices.
  • Financial services, investment management or financial data.

You do not need to be an expert in every technology listed. Strong Python and SQL fundamentals, practical problem-solving ability and the capacity to learn are more important than an extensive list of technologies on your CV.

Qualifications and experience

A degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering.

We welcome applications from:

  • Recent graduates who can demonstrate practical programming and problem-solving ability.
  • Early-career software engineers with approximately one to two years of relevant experience.
  • Final-year students with strong technical fundamentals who can work part-time for at least three days per week, if the role's employment arrangements permit.

Relevant internships, university projects, personal applications, open-source contributions and other demonstrable technical work can help establish your capability.

An opportunity to develop

This role offers exposure to practical software engineering and data challenges in a business where reliable information and effective technology matter.

You will have the opportunity to develop your Python and data skills, work with business stakeholders, contribute to automation initiatives and gain experience with technologies used to build modern data and AI-enabled solutions.

If you enjoy learning by building, take pride in solving problems and want to see the practical impact of your work, we would like to hear from you.

How to apply

Please submit your CV, academic transcripts and a cover letter outlining:

  1. Your Python and SQL experience.
  2. One software application, data pipeline or technical project you have built or materially contributed to.
  3. The problem the project solved, the technologies you used and your personal contribution.

We are interested in what you can demonstrate, not simply the number of technologies listed on your CV.
