Role Overview

The CNC Operator is responsible for performing CNC machine operations in a production environment, including the TechnoWood, Hundegger K2, Hundegger K2i, and Biesse, as required. The role requires good knowledge in timber construction combined with mechanical skills.

 

This role involves interpreting Cadwork models and shop drawings, setting up and programming the machines, selecting appropriate tools, and processing parts based on predetermined strategies and prepared data. The operator demonstrates proficiency in machine-specific software interfaces, including Cambium (K2i), Lignocam (TechnoWood), BVN/EPK (K2), and Biesseworks (Biesse).

 

Conduct regular maintenance activities such as recalibration, troubleshooting operational issues, and routine upkeep tasks are conducted to ensure optimal machine performance. Additional duties include performing quality checks, effectively managing dust and waste, and maintaining a meticulously organized and safe working environment. The CNC Operator demonstrates strong mechanical aptitude and a solid understanding of timber construction, with hands-on wood processing experience and familiarity with metal or composite materials. They work efficiently in a production environment and consistently meet deadlines without compromising quality.

 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

CNC Operation and Maintenance

  • Operate the Hundegger K2i, Hundegger K2, TechnoWood, and Biesse machines with guidance from the CNC Manager
  • Adhere to quality standards, SOPs, and production schedules
  • Interpret technical drawings and documentation to ensure the correct setup and to meet production requirements
  • Load and process elements according to predetermined strategies
  • Perform quality control checks to verify project-specific tolerances
  • Document and communicate miscuts and/or missing machining
  • Track machining time, as directed
  • Manage dust and waste for workspace efficiency
  • Conduct regular equipment maintenance and recalibration
  • Maintain an organized and safe working environment with strict adherence to OHS standards
  • Ensures coordination and collaboration with the job lead and other operators.

 

CNC Programming / Design Consulting

  • Provide strategic input on machining strategies, positioning, and clamping
  • Handle basic programming tasks at the machine level
  • Verify program simulations for personnel and machine safety
  • Diagnose and correct program errors at the machine
  • Collaborate on defining machining strategies and tolerances

 

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the Fabrication team with various tasks including material allocation, preparation, and packaging, as required
  • Work with the CNC Manager to develop and communicate effective SOPs
  • Provide training to CNC apprentices and junior operators, as needed
  • Contribute to optimizing efficiency between machining, design, and fabrication
  • Share expertise when discussing project-specific machining strategies
  • Participate in meetings, as required

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, Attributes

  • Post-secondary education in a relevant field, or equivalent experience
  • Proven experience in CNC operation including programming,  maintenance, with K2i experience considered an asset
  • Proficiency in at least one machine-specific software interface, such as Lignocam for the TechnoWood, EPK for the K2, Cambium for the K2i,or BiesseWorks for the Biesse. Proficiency in multiple machine specific software interfaces is considered an asset
  • Experience with wood processing is essential; experience with metal or composite materials is an asset
  • Excellent organizational and time management abilities
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Detail-oriented with a focus on delivering high-quality results in an efficient manner


Schedule and Working Conditions

  • Ability to work 7:30-5:15, Monday – Thursday, with a 15-minute paid coffee break and a 30-minute unpaid lunch each day, and every second Friday from 7:30-4:00, with a 15-minute paid coffee break and a 30-minute unpaid lunch each day
  • Ability to work on-site at Spearhead headquarters
  • Manual dexterity to operate machines and hand tools on a regular basis
  • Ability to stand and move around the fabrication shop for work shifts
  • Ability to work in a workshop with exposure to dust, chemicals, and noise using required PPE, as needed
  • Ability to move and carry materials up to 50 lbs on a regular basis

 

Compensation

  • Pay range is $30-$40 per hour commensurate with experience and qualifications
