Reporter, AI Computing

About The Information

The Information is the go-to source of in-depth reporting for the most influential leaders in technology and business. Founded in 2013 and headquartered in San Francisco, our original, high-quality journalism has the power to inform the most consequential decisions shaping our future, and we’ve built a community of 700,000 active readers who depend on us to do just that. We have a financially healthy business, plenty of capital, and big ambitions to grow our team and business.

About the role

This reporter will break consequential news about AI data center projects and the changing economics behind them by getting inside the leading data center developers, AI cloud providers and their biggest customers (top AI firms). In doing so, this person will have a chance to break news about the hardware bets these firms are making, particularly as alternatives to Nvidia chips proliferate, and changes to the supply and demand for cloud GPU servers. This person will also get ahead of what’s going well with data center projects, as well as what isn’t, including delays and other physical limitations and cost overruns companies are running into (power, labor, regulatory, hardware snags, etc.) long before the broader market learns about it.

These issues will be upstream of the financing and planning for these facilities, meaning the reporter will have a chance to break news on those developments too.

What you'll do

  • Break news about the people, deals, and economics of AI data centers.
  • Write an AI infrastructure column with original reporting or analysis twice a month (the topics would stem naturally from your other reporting)
  • Cultivate source networks among data centers and large AI developers, utility providers, and infrastructure investors.
  • Partner with reporters across our big tech, finance, and venture teams to connect infrastructure issues to broader shifts in capital markets.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of business, finance, or technology reporting experience, including experience with AI infrastructure reporting.
  • A track record of scoop-driven journalism and source-building on a competitive beat.
  • The ability to work out of The Information’s San Francisco or New York office.
