How you will contribute:

We are seeking a passionate and mission-driven Scientist - Downstream Process Chemistry with theoretical knowledge in organic, physical, and biochemistry and experience developing and optimizing downstream bioprocesses. This individual will lead projects focused on improvements to our downstream process development, lead a small team of research associates, and work collaboratively with our team of Scientists and Engineers. The individual will have the opportunity to make an immediate and sustainable impact in the development of the company.

What you will be working on:

  • Serve as a subject matter expert in process chemistry and aid in chemistry problem solving across the company with a focus on R&D activities.
  • Lead projects on the design, development, and optimization of methods for cost-effective and scalable production of highly functional food ingredients - with an initial focus on lemna protein.
  • Develop new and innovative unit operations at laboratory scale and assist in technology transfer to pilot/demo scale such as centrifugation, homogenization, separation and filtration, aggregation/coagulation, drying and chromatography.
  • Implement improved analytical methods (chromatography, spectroscopy, etc.) to assess the effectiveness and robustness of extraction processes. Leverage these insights and in-process data to troubleshoot current processes and provide insights for the development of future research.

What you bring to Plantible:

  • PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, or Biochemistry
  • 0-2+ years of industry experience in a relevant industry focused on R&D and downstream process development.
  • Deep technical expertise in chemistry with the ability to leverage those fundamental insights to inform, improve, and optimize delivery of key product streams derived from lemna biomass and work towards delivery of novel co-products.
  • Molecular level understanding of plant metabolites, physical chemistry information as it pertains to the solubility/pH/electrolyte impacts, and familiarity with biological macromolecular behavior in solution with a focus on proteins and polysaccharides.
  • Relevant experience with downstream bioprocessing unit operations such as preparative chromatography, centrifugation, depth, dead-end, and tangential flow filtration, and drying technologies etc.
  • Ability to learn quickly, solve complex problems and have excellent data analysis/interpretation skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Being a self-starter and able to respond creatively and simply to continuous change and steady growth environment.
  • Thrive in a fast-paced environment where the primary focus is on simplification and optimization.
