Prime Data Centers

Enterprise Data Center Instructional Designer

About Prime Data Centers

Prime Data Centers develops, acquires, and operates data centers for some of the world's largest enterprises. A private firm owned by a group controlling $6 billion in assets, with a 15-year tenure in technology and real estate development, Prime provides customers with ownership options and dynamic leasing models, defining a true corporate partnership.

About the role

The Enterprise Data Center Instructional Designer builds the eLearning that keeps data center operations staff safe, compliant, and proficient. You will turn procedures, equipment documentation, and subject-matter expertise into self-paced courses, simulations, and job aids for technicians, facility engineers, and shift leads across the enterprise data center portfolio.

This role sits in the Data Center Operations training function and reports to the Director of Technical Training. The content you build supports onboarding, recurring compliance and safety training, and change readiness when new equipment, procedures, or sites come online.

What you'll do

Course design and development

  • Design and build interactive eLearning modules, microlearning, video, and scenario-based simulations covering data center operations: power distribution (UPS, generators, switchgear, PDUs), cooling and environmental systems, fire detection and suppression, physical security, cabling and rack standards, and incident response.
  • Translate standard operating procedures (SOPs), methods of procedure (MOPs), emergency operating procedures (EOPs), and equipment manuals into clear, task-based learning.
  • Develop assessments, knowledge checks, and hands-on practical evaluations that verify competency before staff work on live infrastructure.
  • Create job aids, quick-reference guides, and performance support that technicians can use on the floor.

Analysis and SME collaboration

  • Conduct needs analysis with site leaders, critical facilities engineers, and EHS to identify skill gaps, recurring incidents, and new-equipment training needs.
  • Partner with subject-matter experts to capture tacit knowledge, validate technical accuracy, and review content before release.
  • Align training with Uptime Institute tier requirements, NFPA 70E electrical safety, OSHA, and internal compliance standards.

Program management and delivery

  • Publish and maintain content in the LMS, including SCORM/xAPI packaging, enrollment rules, and completion tracking.
  • Maintain a content library and version control so every site trains to the current procedure.
  • Build and support certification paths for roles such as Data Center Technician, Critical Facilities Engineer, and Shift Supervisor.

Measurement and continuous improvement

  • Measure training effectiveness with completion, assessment, and on-the-job performance data; report results to operations leadership.
  • Revise content based on learner feedback, audit findings, incident post-mortems, and procedure changes.
  • Stay current on instructional design practice, authoring tools, and data center technology trends.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, Adult Learning, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 4+ years designing and developing eLearning for technical, operational, or safety-critical audiences.
  • Proven command of adult learning principles and design models such as ADDIE, SAM, or action mapping.
  • Expert-level skill in at least one major authoring tool (Articulate Storyline/Rise, Adobe Captivate, or similar) and working knowledge of video editing and graphics tools.
  • Hands-on experience publishing and administering content in an enterprise LMS, including SCORM, xAPI, and completion reporting.
  • Demonstrated ability to turn dense technical procedures and engineering documentation into clear, accurate training.
  • Strong writing, visual design, and stakeholder-management skills; comfortable interviewing SMEs and pushing for technical precision.
  • A portfolio of eLearning work that shows technical or compliance content.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in data center operations, critical facilities, mission-critical engineering, or a similar 24x7 environment (utilities, telecom, manufacturing).
  • Familiarity with data center infrastructure: UPS and battery systems, generators, switchgear, CRAC/CRAH units, chillers, BMS/DCIM platforms, and fire suppression.
  • Working knowledge of NFPA 70E, OSHA 29 CFR 1910, Uptime Institute tier standards, or ISO 27001/SOC 2 training requirements.
  • Certifications such as CPTD/APTD (ATD), CDCP/CDCS (EPI), CDCTP (IDCA), or Uptime Institute ATS/AOS.
  • Experience with scenario-based simulation, VR/AR, or digital-twin training for equipment and procedures.
  • Experience building training for distributed, multi-site, or global teams.
  • Spanish or another second language relevant to site locations.

Working Conditions

  • Primarily office or remote work with regular visits to data center sites to observe tasks, film procedures, and validate content with on-floor staff.
  • Travel up to 25% to data center locations, including occasional overnight travel.
  • Must be able to access all areas of a data center, including raised floors, mechanical and electrical rooms, and rooftop equipment, while wearing required PPE.
  • Must pass a background check and comply with site security and confidentiality requirements.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary range and performance bonus program
  • Dollar-for-dollar 401(k) match up to 4% that is fully vested upon enrollment
  • 100% employee premiums paid by employer for medical, dental, vision, life insurance, and disability
  • 4+ weeks of Paid Time Off + Sick time
