About Abby Health

Abby Health is Australia’s busiest online clinic, built for the future of primary care.

Founded in 2023, Abby was established to address one of the most urgent issues in Australian healthcare: access. With one in three Australians now without a regular GP, we're reimagining how people access everyday care - without losing what makes care personal: long-term relationships and detailed patient histories.

We connect patients to licensed GPs and Nurse Practitioners through same-day, 100% online care - delivering high-quality treatment for everyday issues, from headaches to herpes, coughs to cramps, and everything in between. Behind the scenes, we use structured patient histories, smart intake tools, and streamlined workflows to make every consult feel more like self-care.

Our approach is guided by three core values:
🔹 Smart – Intelligent systems that surface what matters, when it matters
🔹 Beautiful – A thoughtful, intuitive experience for patients and clinicians alike
🔹 Caring – Human support, continuity of care, and relationships that last

We believe the future of primary care is affordable, same-day, and online first.
A system where most care is delivered remotely - supported by pre-diagnosis tools, wearables, alerts, and proactive follow-up. In-person visits become the exception, not the default. It’s a smarter, safer, more efficient model one that finally puts patients first.

And it’s already happening.

Since launching, Abby has become one of the most trusted names in digital healthcare in Australia. We’re used by hundreds of thousands of Australians, with a 4.7/5 average rating on Google and Trustpilot.

We’re quality-first and purpose-driven. Whether you’re a patient looking for better answers or a clinician looking for a better way to practise - Abby is here to make care better, for everyone.

Smart. Beautiful. Caring. That’s the future we’re building - for Australian primary care, and the people who rely on it.

The role

You'll build across the whole platform: the patient app, the clinician portal, our internal tooling, the mobile apps and the API behind all of them. You'll report directly to our CTO - a technical co-founder who's still hands-on in the code - which means short feedback loops, real code review, and someone senior in the room when a problem gets hard.

This is a role for an engineer a few years into their career who wants to move fast and grow faster. You'll own your day-to-day work end-to-end and contribute to our largest, most complex projects. You'll make the call yourself on well-scoped problems, and bring the ambiguous ones to the team early - with options and a recommendation, not just a question. As you build context, the scope of what you own grows with it.

What you'll do

  • Ship features across the stack. frontend, backend, database and own the day-to-day delivery of your slice of the work
  • Contribute to large, complex projects alongside the team, taking clear ownership of the pieces that are yours
  • Clarify assumptions and scope up front. Asking the right question before you build is worth more here than fixing it after
  • Help keep production healthy - debug real patient-facing issues, respond when things break, and care that patients never feel it
  • Build a working understanding of how Abby delivers care, so you know why the thing you're building matters to a patient or a clinician

Your first six months

  • 1 month - you know your way around our systems and can debug and fix production issues with light support. Onboarding here takes days, not weeks.
  • 3 months - you're shipping features independently and owning a meaningful part of a major project.
  • 6 months - you've delivered capability patients and clinicians actually use, and you're someone we can hand a whole feature to and trust the outcome.

How we build

  • AI-native. AI tools (Claude Code, primarily) write most of our code. Your leverage is judgment, direction and review - knowing what to ask for, and spotting when the answer looks right but isn't. If you're already building this way, you'll feel at home; if the idea doesn't excite you, this isn't the right role.
  • Patients first. The tech comes second to the patient experience. We optimise to the level that makes sense for the problem, not for its own sake.
  • In person. We're a small team that moves fastest in the same room. This role is Sydney-based and in the office regularly.

Our stack

React + TypeScript on the front end (patient app and clinician portal), Node.js + Express + PostgreSQL on the back end, AWS infrastructure, and a Swift iOS app. Around that: Datadog, Auth0, Stripe, and integrations across the Australian healthcare ecosystem.

What we're looking for

  • A few years shipping production software. Roughly a couple of years, with real users on the other side of your code.
  • Comfortable across the stack. You'll be stronger at one thing, that's fine, but you're not put off by others.
  • You clarify before you build. You surface assumptions early, ask the question that saves a week of rework, and follow through on what you commit to.
  • Quality habits. Attention to detail, accuracy, and pride in work that's finished rather than merely working.
  • Coachable and curious. You take feedback as fuel, actively seek it out, and you're honest with yourself about where your gaps are.
  • Interested in the business, not just the code. You want to understand Abby's priorities and how your work ladders up to them.
  • Comfortable with pace and change. Startup experience is a strong plus; being unfazed when priorities shift is the real requirement.
  • Sydney-based and keen to work alongside the team in person.

What you get

  • Competitive salary $120 - $140k, depending on experience
  • ESOP (eligibility from 6 months)
  • A direct line to the CTO - you'll learn faster here in a year than in three somewhere with layers
  • Real ownership at a growing healthtech startup, working alongside the founders
