About the role

Our test range is where warhead designs stop being models and start producing data. Keeping it running is physical, outdoor, hands-on work: building and tearing down target arrays, setting instrumentation, hauling and staging materiel, clearing brush and maintaining berms and roads, and running the property like a working ranch that happens to have a live-fire fan on it. You will work directly under the Director of Range Operations alongside the Range Safety Officer, and you will be trusted with weapons handling, energetic materials movement, and range safety discipline from your first week.

What success looks like in this role

• By day 30: Completed range safety, weapons handling, HAZMAT, and ITAR training; qualified to work on the range under direct supervision; knows the property, the range fan, the QD arcs, and where every gate and cut-off point is.
• By day 60: Independently setting up and tearing down standard target arrays and witness plates; maintaining range vehicles, equipment, and fencing on a written PM schedule; supporting live-fire events as a fully counted member of the range crew.
• By day 90: Running pre-event range prep end to end from an event card with minimal supervision, and maintaining the range materiel and consumables inventory without prompting.

What you'll do

• Set up, instrument, and tear down test events: target arrays, witness panels, fragment recovery media, camera and sensor positions, standoff measurement, and downrange safety markings.
• Handle, stage, transport, and account for weapons, ammunition, and energetic materials in strict accordance with range SOPs, ATF storage rules, and RSO direction — including magazine accountability and end-of-day reconciliation.
• Maintain the property: brush and vegetation control, berms, backstops, access roads, fencing, gates, signage, water and generator systems, and the range shed.
• Operate and maintain trucks, trailers, tractors, skid steers, UTVs, and shop and hand tools; keep range vehicles and equipment serviceable and on a documented maintenance schedule.
• Support live-fire safety operations: range clearance and sweeps, posting flags and access control, fire watch, misfire/dud standoff procedures, and post-event site remediation — with immediate compliance to any stop-work call from the RSO.

Qualifications

Required

• High school diploma or GED.
• Demonstrated competence and comfort handling firearms safely, including familiarity with the four rules of firearms safety and safe muzzle/weapon status discipline.
• Physically fit and able to work outdoors year-round in Central Texas heat; lift and carry 50 lbs repeatedly, dig, climb, and work extended days during test campaigns.
• Practical hands-on skills: vehicle and equipment operation, basic mechanical repair, fencing, welding or fabrication basics, and general property maintenance.
• Valid Texas driver's license with a clean record and the ability to tow trailers; must be able to obtain a HAZMAT endorsement within 6 months.
• Must pass a background check and not be a prohibited person under 18 U.S.C. § 922(g); able to work around energetic materials under ATF rules.
• U.S. Person status required per ITAR, 22 CFR § 120.62. Ability to obtain a U.S. Secret clearance preferred but not required at hire.

Preferred

• Prior U.S. military service, particularly combat arms, EOD, ammunition/ordnance (89B/2111/2W0X1), or range cadre experience.
• Prior experience as a ranch hand, heavy equipment operator, or on a commercial or military range, ammunition plant, or proving ground.
• Range Safety Officer certification (NRA or equivalent), CDL, welding certification, or wildland fire / first-responder training.
