The Role:

We are looking for a delivery-focused Software Product Owner to drive the development of a multi-customer SaaS application in the energy sector. The platform brings together data and interactions across connected devices, operational systems and third-party sources, turning them into software capabilities and insights that help customers operate and make decisions more effectively.

This is a hands-on Product Ownership role at the intersection of Product Management and Engineering. You will translate product strategy, customer problems and roadmap priorities into a healthy, delivery-ready backlog; create the conditions for predictable sprint execution; and influence both near-term engineering delivery and future roadmap choices through evidence from delivery, users and technical constraints.

The successful candidate will bring a strong product mindset. Rather than building one-off solutions for individual customers, you will continually look for reusable capabilities, configuration and scalable patterns that allow the product to serve multiple energy customers while protecting the integrity and direction of the core platform.

What to expect day to day:

• Own and actively manage the team backlog, maintaining clear priority, appropriate runway and a strong flow of ready work into upcoming sprints.

• Lead regular backlog refinement with Engineering, QA, UX and relevant technical stakeholders so scope, dependencies, acceptance criteria and delivery risks are understood before sprint commitment.

• Work closely with Product Management to take agreed product outcomes and EPICs through discovery and refinement, decomposing them into coherent, valuable and estimable user stories that are ready for engineering delivery.

• Maintain clear readiness criteria for EPICs and stories, ensuring the problem, customer value, scope, acceptance criteria, dependencies, non-functional needs and expected outcomes are sufficiently understood at the appropriate level.

• Participate actively in sprint planning, reviews and other team ceremonies, providing rapid decisions and clarification so the team can maintain momentum and achieve sprint goals.

• Build shared understanding between Product Management and Engineering, challenging ambiguity, surfacing trade-offs early and helping turn strategic priorities into realistic delivery plans and release increments.

• Use delivery evidence, technical learning, customer feedback and emerging constraints to influence sequencing, roadmap assumptions and product decisions with Product Management.

• Balance scope, value, quality, risk and time to improve delivery predictability, proactively identifying blockers, dependencies and decisions that could put committed outcomes at risk.

• Partner with engineering leadership and architecture specialists on technical enablers, integration dependencies and platform evolution while keeping solution design decisions with the appropriate technical owners.

• Work with customer-facing and domain teams to understand common needs across utilities and energy-sector users, separating reusable product capability from customer-specific configuration or implementation needs.

• Support release readiness and communicate delivered capability, scope and relevant product changes clearly to internal stakeholders.

Product & Delivery Mindset:

• Think in terms of customer problems, outcomes and reusable product capability rather than a collection of individual feature requests.

• Protect a sustainable core product while recognising the integration, configuration, data and operational differences that exist across multiple energy customers.

• Create transparency between roadmap intent and engineering reality, making trade-offs visible early enough for informed decisions.

• Use iterative development to learn and adjust. Seek the smallest, valuable increment that can validate assumptions and move the product forward without sacrificing long-term product coherence.

• Treat backlog readiness and refinement as continuous activities, not as preparation performed only immediately before sprint planning.

Essential Criteria:

• At least 3 years’ experience as a Product Owner, Senior Product Owner or equivalent role delivering complex software products.

• Demonstrable experience working hands-on with software engineering teams in sprint-based Agile delivery, including backlog refinement, sprint planning, daily Scrum, sprint reviews, retrospectives and release planning.

• Strong backlog management skills, including prioritisation, decomposition of EPICs, user-story creation, acceptance criteria and maintaining sufficient delivery-ready work ahead of the team.

• Experience partnering with Product Management to translate product strategy, roadmap priorities and customer outcomes into executable delivery backlogs.

• Proven ability to influence engineering delivery without line-managing the team, creating clarity, resolving ambiguity and facilitating timely product decisions.

• Experience developing SaaS, cloud or data-centric software products where capabilities need to scale across multiple customers rather than being built as bespoke solutions.

• Experience working with data-intensive or large-scale software platforms, with an understanding of how data is ingested, processed, stored and consumed across a product.

• Sound understanding of the software development lifecycle, APIs/integrations, data flows and the delivery considerations associated with modern cloud-based applications.

• Ability to work with technical stakeholders on dependencies, non-functional requirements, cybersecurity, quality and operational considerations without prescribing architecture or implementation.

• Excellent facilitation, communication and stakeholder-management skills, with the confidence to challenge constructively and make value-led prioritisation decisions.

• Comfort using delivery and product evidence to identify risk, improve predictability and inform roadmap conversations.

• Fluent written and spoken English.

Desirable:

• Practical experience with Disciplined Agile and an understanding of choosing and adapting ways of working to suit the product, team and delivery context.

• Experience in the energy, utilities, industrial IoT, grid monitoring or other asset-intensive / operational technology domain.

• Experience with software platforms that ingest, contextualise or analyse data from connected devices, enterprise systems or third-party sources.

• Understanding of microservices, APIs, event/data-driven architectures and cloud-native SaaS delivery.

• Experience working across multiple software teams or coordinating dependencies in a complex product environment.

• Experience with Behaviour-Driven Development (BDD), collaborative acceptance-criteria definition or similar practices that improve shared understanding and story readiness.

What good looks like:

• Engineering enters sprint planning with a clear, prioritised backlog and enough well-understood work to make credible commitments.

• EPICs are progressively refined with Product Management and technical stakeholders before they reach the team, reducing late discovery and avoidable delivery churn.

• Stories are small enough to deliver iteratively, clearly linked to product outcomes and supported by testable acceptance criteria.

• Delivery risks, cross-team dependencies and scope decisions are surfaced early and actively managed rather than discovered late in the release cycle.

• Customer requests are translated into scalable product capability wherever possible, helping the platform serve multiple customers without uncontrolled customisation.

• Roadmap conversations are informed by engineering reality, customer learning and evidence from delivery, improving confidence in sequencing and target dates.

Our Values

  • We work together
  • We believe in people
  • We won’t accept the ‘way it has always been done’
  • We listen to learn
  • We’re trying to do the right thing
