School Bus Driver - On-Call/Trips

POSITION SUMMARY

The On-Call School Bus Driver position transports students on an as-needed basis. It may include driving an assigned route in the early morning and/or late afternoon and/or driving groups of students on scheduled trips, including but not limited to athletic games, class trips, outdoor education, and other school activities. This is an on-call position with variable hours and a variable work schedule that may include evenings and occasional weekends.


We are a small but dynamic transportation team seeking a qualified driver who wants to be part of a supportive and close-knit community. While we prefer candidates who can handle both daily routes and additional trips, we are willing to be flexible for the right person.

This position is ideal for someone looking to supplement their regular work schedule, as hours can be adjusted to align with their driving availability.

Pay Range: $32/hour. If pursuing a CDL, a pay rate of $28/hour would apply.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Drives school bus routes as assigned as a back-up driver. 
  • Drives class, athletics, & outdoor program trips as scheduled. Possible overnight and weekend trips.
  • Adheres to assigned schedule of buses and drivers as designated by the Transportation Manager. 
  • Loads and unloads students at designated on- or off-campus areas.
  • Returns buses to assigned parking areas.
  • Maintains clean conditions in the interior of the bus. Checks for items left on the bus after each trip.
  • Maintains order and discipline among riders on the bus at all times. Adheres to Oregon Department of Education Pupil Transportation Behavior Policies as well as Catlin Gabel policies. Reports all discipline problems and concerns to the Transportation Manager.
  • Operates vehicles in accordance with all applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, and in compliance with all School policies.
  • Observes all safety regulations, adhering to principles of defensive driving.
  • Reports all vehicle problems to the Transportation Manager promptly and completes Daily Vehicle Inspection Report.
  • Maintains a professional demeanor and clean, neat appearance as a representative of the School.
  • Maintains current Commercial Driver License and School Bus Driver Certificate at all times.
  • Reports any convictions for driving, accidents, or criminal offenses to the Transportation Manager within 15 days of occurrence, as specified in Oregon regulations.
  • Attends scheduled driver meetings and participates in training sessions offered by the School.
  • Completes scheduled tasks promptly with a minimum of supervision.

INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS

  • Daily contact with students and staff.  
  • Frequent contact with parents, faculty, and other School constituents. 


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School diploma or GED required
  • One year of experience driving school buses in city traffic. 
  • A current Oregon Commercial Driver’s License with no more than two (2) convictions is required. Convictions are consistent with ODE laws and regulations.  
  • Valid Oregon CDL with Air Brake, Passenger, “S” endorsements and ODE certified School Bus Certification.
  • Have the required number of training hours on record with the ODE 
  • Background check required 
  • Drug and alcohol testing as required by the Oregon Board of Education and Federal DOT requirements, which includes pre-employment testing as well as random drug testing.
  • Ability to drive all sizes of school buses ranging in size from 84 passenger to 14 passenger.
  • Read and write in English  
  • Ability to lift 530 lbs. and push or pull 100 lbs.  
  • Ability to communicate on telephone, voicemail, and e-mail. 
  • Ability to locate pickup sites on a map use GPS mapping as well as follow printed turn-by-turn instructions.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The requirements listed below are representative of physical requirements and may not be all-encompassing.  Drivers must be able to perform job duties with or without accommodations.

  • Duties are performed on a school bus, Type A through Type D.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to loud noise levels; fumes or airborne particles; noxious odors; vibrations from driving a bus, and traffic. 
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions. 
  • Frequently required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; use foot controls to drive; reach with hands and arms; climb; bend, stoop, and kneel; and talk or hear. 
  • The employee must be physically able to perform and demonstrate emergency evacuation procedures. This includes the pushing/pulling of up to 50 pounds. In addition, have the ability to use emergency exits at any location on the bus. 
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, night/dusk vision, color vision, and peripheral vision
  • Occasional bending, squatting, stooping and kneeling related to maintaining the cleanliness of the bus

SCHEDULE:

This position is on an on-call basis with variable hours, generally less than 20 hours per week.
