Failure Analysis Engineer INTERN

Role Overview

We are seeking a Junior Failure Analysis Engineer to support structured investigations into material, device, and component failures.

This role is ideal for early-career engineers or recent graduates with a background in materials/metallurgy or electronics/PCB systems who are interested in hands-on problem solving and laboratory work.

You will work closely with senior engineers to develop root cause analyses and translate data into clear, evidence-based conclusions.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Support failure investigations involving fracture, corrosion, contamination, degradation, and defects
  • Perform microscopy and microanalysis (training provided for SEM/EDS as needed)
  • Prepare and analyze cross-sections to evaluate failure mechanisms
  • Execute hands-on lab work including sample prep, imaging, and data collection
  • Assist in developing and executing test plans based on investigative hypotheses
  • Maintain clear documentation and ensure traceability of all analyses
  • Contribute to technical reports and data summaries
  • increasing responsibility over time

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Metallurgy, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
  • 0–3 years of experience (industry, internships, research, or lab work)
  • Foundational understanding of either:
    • Materials/metallurgy
    • Electronics / PCB / PCBA systems
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Attention to detail and ability to follow structured processes
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications (Not Required)

  • Experience with microscopy (optical, SEM) or materials characterization
  • Exposure to failure analysis, reliability testing, or root cause methodologies
  • Hands-on lab or project experience involving materials or electronics
  • Familiarity with cross-sectioning or sample preparation
