FA Analyst

Role Summary

The Failure Analysis (FA) Analyst performs hands-on laboratory work to support investigations into material, device, and component failures. This role focuses on precise sample preparation, imaging, and documentation to generate high-quality, traceable data.

This is a hands-on, skill-based role. Candidates with strong manual skills and attention to detail—from technical trades, crafts, or mechanical work—are encouraged to apply.

 

Key Responsibilities

Sample Preparation

  • Perform cutting, sectioning, mounting, and polishing of samples
  • Prepare cross-sections to target planes using procedures
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of tools and workspace
  • Follow all lab safety and handling protocols

Imaging & Analysis Support

  • Acquire images using optical microscopes and camera systems
  • Support SEM/EDS imaging and analysis (training provided)
  • Capture, label, and archive images per lab standards

Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain detailed lab notes and sample tracking records
  • Organize image datasets and measurement outputs
  • Assist in preparing report figures, and basic observations
  • Ensure traceability between samples, images, and reports

Equipment & Lab Support

  • Perform routine equipment checks and basic maintenance
  • Escalate tool issues or anomalies promptly
  • Support FA engineers with daily lab operations

Training & Development

  • Learn FA techniques, terminology, and lab best practices
  • take on increasing responsibility as skills develop
  • Incorporate feedback and continuously improve

Required Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree, technical certification, or equivalent hands-on experience
  • Demonstrated manual skill and precision (e.g., machining, woodworking, automotive work, fabrication, electronics repair, etc.)
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational discipline
  • Ability to follow structured processes consistently and accurately

Preferred Qualifications (Not Required)

  • Experience with sample preparation, microscopy, or lab work
  • Background in metallurgy, materials, or PCB/PCBA work
  • Experience working with small, delicate, or high-value components
