The Excavation Support person is a laborer who performs a variety of manual tasks outdoors in all weather conditions; including digging, laying conduit, helping with machinery, etc. This is all done while working in a safe and effective manner.

Deeply Digital's outside plant focuses primarily on placing underground and aerial fiber for telecommunications. Its services include line, coaxial, and optical fiber cable placement, splicing, and home installation.

Position Overview: 
 

We are seeking a detail-oriented and organized Drop Splice Foreman to join our team. The Fiber Drop Splicing Foreman is responsible for leading field crews and coordinating fiber drop splicing activities within an assigned service area. This role ensures that residential and commercial drops are spliced safely, accurately, and in accordance with company quality standards, network designs, and production expectations. The Foreman works alongside technicians in the field while directing daily activities across assigned zones. This position is accountable for achieving daily and weekly production targets, inspecting completed work, troubleshooting network and splicing issues, and ensuring that required documentation is accurate and submitted on time. The Foreman also serves as a technical resource and mentor for the team. This includes training new technicians, advancing the skills of experienced technicians, answering field questions, and reinforcing consistent splicing, testing, documentation, and safety practices. This position will report to the Splice Lead. 

Key Responsibilities: 

Field Leadership and Crew Coordination 

• Lead the daily activities of fiber drop splicing technicians within assigned service areas and construction zones. 

• Work in the field alongside assigned technicians to provide hands-on leadership, technical support, and quality oversight. 

• Assign work based on service-area priorities, technician skill levels, available resources, and daily production requirements. 

• Coordinate crews to ensure all assigned drops are completed within established customer and project timelines. 

• Monitor production throughout the day and make adjustments when crews are falling behind schedule or encountering field obstacles. 

• Maintain regular communication with technicians regarding work assignments, priorities, network conditions, and changes to the daily plan. 

• Promote accountability, teamwork, professionalism, and consistent performance across the assigned crew. 

• Escalate staffing, material, design, access, or network issues that may prevent the team from meeting production goals. 

Production Management 

• Ensure the team meets required daily and weekly fiber drop splicing targets while maintaining company quality and safety standards. 

• Track the number of drops assigned, attempted, completed, tested, failed, and carried over. 

• Identify causes of incomplete work, repeat visits, failed tests, and production delays, and develop practical plans to resolve them. 

• Balance production expectations with workmanship requirements to ensure output is not achieved at the expense of safety, network integrity, or customer experience. 

• Verify that technicians have the tools, equipment, materials, assignments, and network information needed to complete their work efficiently. 

• Communicate daily production status, outstanding work, and anticipated risks to management. 

• Support scheduling and resource planning based on workload, service-area demands, and technician availability. 

Quality Control and Compliance 

• Inspect completed drop splices to confirm they meet company specifications, splice-design requirements, and workmanship standards. 

• Ensure technicians follow approved procedures for fiber preparation, cleaning, splicing, testing, routing, labeling, and documentation. 

• Confirm that completed drops provide acceptable light levels and connectivity before work is closed. 

• Review failed or underperforming work and coordinate corrective action as needed. 

• Identify recurring quality issues and provide immediate coaching or additional training to prevent repeat problems. 

• Ensure splice cases, terminals, cabinets, enclosures, and work areas are left properly secured, organized, labeled, and protected. 

• Reinforce compliance with company policies, safety procedures, customer-property requirements, and applicable construction standards. 

• Maintain high standards for first-time completion and minimize repeat service calls, rework, and avoidable network outages. 

Technical Support and Troubleshooting 

• Serve as the primary point of contact for technicians who encounter splicing, testing, design, documentation, or network-related problems in the field. 

• Troubleshoot issues such as poor light levels, loss of signal, damaged fiber, incorrect routing, mismatched assignments, defective connectors, failed splices, and inaccessible facilities. 

• Understand how optical signals travel through the fiber network and use that knowledge to identify likely points of failure. 

• Help technicians determine whether an issue originates at the drop, terminal, FDH cabinet, active cabinet, feeder, distribution fiber, pass-through path, or another network component. 

• Interpret test results and field conditions to determine the appropriate repair or escalation path. 

• Coordinate with management, engineering, construction, splicing, GIS, or other departments when a problem cannot be resolved by the field crew. 

• Protect existing customers and network infrastructure while troubleshooting or performing work in active cabinets and facilities. 

Network and Design Knowledge 

• Maintain a working knowledge of the fiber network architecture within the assigned service area. 

• Understand the purpose and operation of fiber distribution hubs (FDHs), active cabinets, terminals, splitters, feeder fibers, distribution fibers, drop fibers, and related network components. 

• Understand how pass-through configurations function at an FDH and how those configurations affect fiber routing and service activation. 

• Read and interpret splice designs, fiber assignments, cable counts, port assignments, cabinet information, and network maps. 

• Use GIS and the Last Foot Portal to locate network assets, verify service addresses, review drop assignments, and confirm the intended fiber route. 

• Compare design information with actual field conditions and promptly report discrepancies. 

• Ensure technicians are working from the correct design, assignment, cabinet, terminal, port, and service location before splicing begins. 

Training and Technician Development 

• Provide hands-on onboarding and field training for new fiber drop splicing technicians. 

• Assess technician skill levels and identify individual training needs. 

• Provide advanced instruction to existing technicians on splicing techniques, testing, troubleshooting, network architecture, quality standards, and documentation. 

• Demonstrate proper use, care, cleaning, and basic maintenance of fusion splicers, cleavers, testing equipment, hand tools, and other field equipment. 

• Coach technicians on how to independently diagnose field problems and make sound decisions. 

• Document performance or training concerns and communicate them to management when additional support or corrective action is required. 

• Encourage continuous improvement and reinforce consistent processes across the entire team. 

Reporting and Documentation 

• Complete and submit accurate daily reports covering all work performed within the assigned service area. 

• Gather required information from each technician and verify its accuracy before submitting the daily report. 

• Report completed drops, unsuccessful attempts, pending assignments, failed tests, rework, material use, crew productivity, and field issues. 

• Document delays and exceptions, including access problems, incorrect designs, damaged facilities, material shortages, equipment failures, safety concerns, and network outages. 

• Ensure completed work is correctly updated in the required project, GIS, production, and closeout systems. 

• Maintain clear records of quality inspections, coaching, training, corrective work, and escalated network issues. 

• Provide management with timely and reliable information needed to evaluate production, quality, staffing, and project status. 

Required Qualifications  

• High school diploma or equivalent. 

• Previous experience performing fiber-optic splicing, preferably involving customer drops and outside-plant fiber networks. 

• Demonstrated ability to lead, direct, train, or mentor field technicians. 

• Strong knowledge of fusion splicing, fiber preparation, cleaning, testing, routing, labeling, and closeout procedures. 

• Working knowledge of how light travels through a fiber-optic network, including the effects of loss, contamination, damage, poor connections, and failed splices. 

• Ability to understand and work within FDH cabinets, active cabinets, terminals, and pass-through configurations. 

• Ability to read and interpret splice designs, network maps, fiber assignments, and construction documentation. 

• Experience using GIS-based mapping systems or fiber-network documentation platforms. 

• Ability to troubleshoot fiber-network and field-installation issues using test results, network documentation, and physical inspection. 

• Ability to organize multiple technicians and assignments while meeting daily and weekly production requirements. 

• Strong written communication and reporting skills, with close attention to detail and accuracy. 

• Ability to work independently, make timely field decisions, and appropriately escalate unresolved issues. 

• Valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record. 

• Ability to travel throughout the assigned service area and work outdoors in varying weather and field conditions. 

• Ability to perform the physical duties associated with field-based fiber work, with or without reasonable accommodation. 

• Ability to work flexible hours as project schedules, customer needs, or network conditions require. 

Preferred Qualifications  

• Three or more years of fiber-optic splicing or outside-plant telecommunications experience. 

• Previous experience as a fiber foreman, crew lead, senior splicing technician, or field supervisor. 

• Experience managing production goals for multiple technicians or crews. 

• Advanced experience troubleshooting low-light, no-light, high-loss, damaged-fiber, and incorrect-routing conditions. 

• Experience working in live FDHs and active fiber-network environments. 

• Proficiency with splice-design software, GIS platforms, and the Last Foot Portal. 

• Experience training new technicians and delivering advanced field instruction to experienced technicians. 

• Familiarity with optical power meters, visual fault locators, OTDRs, fusion splicers, cleavers, and related fiber-testing equipment. 

• Relevant fiber-optic, telecommunications, OSHA, first aid, traffic-control, or equipment-operation certifications.
