pmtbox

Front-End Integrations Developer

At pmtbox (“Payment Box”), we’re building a fintech platform that drives outcomes for clients around payments optimization, fraud, chargebacks/disputes, and related processes. We’re a VC-backed fintech with a small team, over 1,000 active clients, and big ambitions. We're growing quickly and are building a team of high-ownership operators who care deeply about doing great work.

As we scale, we’re looking for a Front-End Integrations Developer to help make pmtbox work seamlessly with the ecommerce platforms and payment infrastructure our clients already use.

This role sits at the intersection of ecommerce, payments, integrations, and front-end development. Initially, a major focus will be building integrations with third-party ecommerce platforms such as BigCommerce, Magento, and WooCommerce, as well as creating custom adapters that allow pmtbox to work with third-party payment gateways and run our pre-authorization checks during the transaction flow.

Over time, the role will expand further into the checkout experience itself—including plugins, embedded components, and eventually cart and checkout experiences that live directly on merchant websites.

Why this role exists

pmtbox can create significantly more value for merchants when our technology is embedded directly into the systems where transactions originate.

Our clients use different ecommerce platforms, payment gateways, and technology stacks. We need someone who can bridge those environments with pmtbox—understanding how a merchant's checkout and payment flow works, identifying the right integration point, and building a clean, reliable way for our technology to operate inside it.

In the near term, that means building and maintaining integrations with platforms like BigCommerce, Magento, and WooCommerce and developing adapters for third-party gateways so transactions can interact with pmtbox before authorization.

Longer term, we're moving closer to the checkout itself. We expect to build plugins and components that allow pmtbox to evaluate information as the customer enters it—for example, using an email address or other checkout data to run checks immediately and determine whether a transaction presents elevated risk before it progresses further.

Eventually, that may include building more complete cart and checkout experiences that merchants can deploy directly on their sites.

We need an engineer who is excited by that progression.

What this person has to balance

  • Front-end engineering with integration thinking. This isn't primarily about building static interfaces. The front end needs to communicate reliably with ecommerce platforms, payment gateways, APIs, and pmtbox services.
  • Platform knowledge with adaptability. BigCommerce, Magento, WooCommerce, and payment gateways all work differently. This person needs to be comfortable learning third-party systems and figuring out the cleanest way to integrate with them.
  • Speed with reliability. We're a startup and need to move quickly, but these integrations sit directly in ecommerce and payment flows. Small mistakes can have real consequences.
  • Merchant experience with technical constraints. The best integration isn't just technically functional—it should also be easy for a merchant to install, configure, understand, and maintain.
  • Today's integrations with tomorrow's product. Some work will solve immediate client integration needs. Other work will become the foundation for reusable plugins, checkout components, and eventually larger pmtbox commerce experiences.

What this person actually does, week to week

  • Builds and maintains integrations between pmtbox and ecommerce platforms such as BigCommerce, Magento, and WooCommerce.
  • Develops front-end components and integration logic primarily using JavaScript.
  • Builds custom adapters that connect third-party payment gateways to pmtbox so our technology can perform pre-authorization checks within the transaction flow.
  • Works directly with our CTO and engineering team to understand payment flows, APIs, gateway behavior, and where pmtbox should interact with a transaction.
  • Reads and works from third-party platform and API documentation without needing every implementation path defined in advance.
  • Troubleshoots integration issues across merchant environments and determines whether problems originate in the ecommerce platform, gateway, pmtbox, or the integration layer between them.
  • Helps turn one-off integration work into reusable architecture, components, and patterns.
  • Contributes to future pmtbox plugins that embed our technology more deeply into merchant checkout experiences.
  • Eventually helps build checkout and cart components that can live directly on merchant websites and interact with pmtbox in real time.
  • Works closely with senior engineers while independently owning meaningful pieces of integration work.

What "great" looks like from this person

  • A merchant can integrate pmtbox into their existing ecommerce environment without requiring a custom engineering project every time.
  • They can take third-party documentation for a platform or gateway, understand how it works, and figure out how pmtbox should integrate with it.
  • They understand that checkout and payments code needs to be both fast and dependable.
  • They don't treat every integration as a one-off. When they solve something for one merchant or platform, they're thinking about how the solution can become reusable.
  • They can trace a transaction across multiple systems and intelligently diagnose where something is going wrong.
  • They communicate well with senior engineers and know when to independently solve a problem versus when an architectural decision needs broader discussion.
  • The integrations they build create a foundation for pmtbox to move progressively closer to the checkout experience.

Who this is NOT

  • Not a front-end developer whose experience is primarily marketing websites and visual implementation.
  • Not someone who only wants to work from completed Figma files and clearly defined tickets.
  • Not someone uncomfortable reading API documentation or understanding how data moves between systems.
  • Not someone who needs to already know every ecommerce platform—we care more about the ability to quickly understand unfamiliar systems.
  • Not someone who treats integrations as glue code that just needs to work once. We want someone who thinks about reliability, maintainability, and reuse.
  • Not someone who wants a highly structured engineering environment where every requirement and implementation path has already been decided.

Experience and skills requirements

  • 2–3+ years of applicable software development experience, with meaningful front-end or integration development experience.
  • Strong proficiency with JavaScript.
  • Experience working with APIs and integrating front-end applications with third-party systems.
  • Experience with ecommerce platforms, checkout flows, payment integrations, or similar transaction-based systems.
  • Comfortable reading technical documentation and independently figuring out unfamiliar APIs, SDKs, and platform architectures.
  • Strong debugging skills across systems—you should be comfortable tracing what happens when data passes from a browser to an ecommerce platform, gateway, API, and backend service.
  • Understanding of modern web development fundamentals, including HTTP/API interactions, asynchronous JavaScript, authentication, webhooks, and browser behavior.
  • Ability to work closely with senior engineers while taking real ownership of implementation.
  • Comfortable operating in a startup where the architecture and product are still evolving.

Not required but a plus

  • Direct experience building integrations for BigCommerce, Magento, or WooCommerce.
  • PHP experience, particularly in ecommerce environments.
  • Experience with payment gateways, payment processing, checkout systems, fraud/risk products, or fintech.
  • Experience building ecommerce plugins, extensions, apps, or embedded checkout components.
  • Experience working with pre-authorization, fraud screening, or other real-time transaction decisioning.
  • Experience turning custom client integrations into reusable productized integrations.

How we'll evaluate candidates

  • Technical conversation focused on integrations and front-end architecture—how you've connected systems before, how you approach unfamiliar APIs, and how you debug problems that cross multiple systems.
  • Relevant project discussion where you'll walk us through something you've actually built, including the technical decisions you made and problems you encountered.
  • Practical conversation with members of our engineering team centered around a realistic integration problem. We're more interested in how you think and work through ambiguity than in algorithm trivia.
