Reporter, Big Money and Tech

About The Information

The Information is the go-to source of in-depth reporting for the most influential leaders in technology and business. Founded in 2013 and headquartered in San Francisco, our original, high-quality journalism has the power to inform the most consequential decisions shaping our future, and we’ve built a community of 700,000 active readers who depend on us to do just that. We have a financially healthy business, plenty of capital, and big ambitions to grow our team and business.

About the role

The Information is looking for a senior reporter to own coverage of the investors shaping the technology market, with a focus on public-market investors and the late-stage private investors who sit closest to the IPO market.

The role combines source-driven reporting with smart markets analysis, helping readers understand how major investors are viewing tech companies, where capital is moving, and what those shifts mean for public stocks, IPOs, and dealmaking. This will build on The Information’s leading coverage of AI infrastructure, deals and regulation, and offer collaboration opportunities within the finance team and across the newsroom.

The right person will have deep access to major investors across hedge funds, mutual funds, venture firms, crossover funds, private equity firms, sovereign wealth funds, family offices, and other big pools of capital. This reporter should be able to break news, write with authority, and develop a clear voice with smart, differentiated thinking about markets and money.

Our readers include founders, CEOs, investors, bankers, and executives who want to understand not just what happened in the market, but what the smartest capital allocators are doing before the rest of the market catches up. The role should generate scoops, columns, features, interviews, and live-event moments.

The ideal candidate is someone who is comfortable writing about public markets without being too focused on day-to-day market noise. They should also be comfortable explaining how factors like interest rates, regulation, and investor psychology are changing the technology industry.

What you'll do

  • Break news on how major investors are positioning around technology companies. Also produce larger features and profiles, as well as data-driven insights.
  • Build and maintain a deep source network among hedge funds, mutual funds, crossover investors, private equity firms, venture firms, sovereign wealth funds, and family offices.
  • Write differentiated analysis on what sophisticated investors believe the market is missing. Contribute columns on a regular basis.
  • Conduct high-profile interviews with investors, CEOs, founders, bankers, and other influential figures in technology and finance.
  • Serve as a voice for The Information at events, on panels, in live interviews, and on TITV.
  • Collaborate with reporters across the newsroom on stories involving the broader flow of capital into technology.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience covering business, finance, markets, investing, or technology.
  • A strong track record of source-driven reporting and breaking news.
  • Deep understanding of public markets, private markets, institutional investors, and company valuation.
  • Demonstrated ability to write with authority and clarity.
  • Experience cultivating senior sources across investors, executives, bankers, and other influential decision-makers and advisors.
  • Strong judgment about what matters to sophisticated readers.
  • The ability to work out of The Information’s San Francisco or New York office.

What Success Looks Like

You’ll quickly become one of The Information’s signature voices on money, markets, and technology. Within your first few months, you’ll be breaking news and publishing analysis and commentary that get investors, founders, and executives talking. Over time, your coverage will become a must-read for those who want to understand where capital is moving and what the smartest investors believe is coming next.
