Position Summary

The Billing & Settlements Specialist plays a critical role in supporting the financial health of Horizon Case Management by managing billing, collections, and settlement activities related to personal injury, auto injury, workers' compensation, and litigated claims.

This position focuses on tracking outstanding invoices, communicating with attorneys and insurance adjusters, negotiating settlements, resolving billing disputes, and ensuring timely payment recovery. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, persistent, professional, and comfortable handling complex claim-related communications.


Key Responsibilities

Claims & Billing Management

  • Track and manage outstanding invoices and accounts receivable related to injury and litigated claims.
  • Prepare, review, and submit accurate billing documentation to insurance adjusters, attorneys, and third-party payers.
  • Monitor claim activity and payment status to ensure timely processing and reimbursement.
  • Identify and address billing issues, discrepancies, and payment delays.

Collections & Settlement Coordination

  • Follow up with insurance carriers, adjusters, attorneys, and other responsible parties regarding unpaid or disputed claims.
  • Negotiate settlements and payment agreements while maintaining professional relationships.
  • Manage collection efforts and document all communications and outcomes.
  • Escalate unresolved collection matters to management as appropriate.

Documentation & Compliance

  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of billing, collections, settlements, and communications.
  • Ensure all activities comply with HIPAA regulations, confidentiality requirements, and company policies.
  • Organize and maintain claim-related documentation and supporting records.
  • Stay informed regarding billing procedures, legal processes, and industry best practices.

Collaboration & Reporting

  • Work closely with Case Managers, Finance, Operations, and Leadership teams to resolve billing concerns.
  • Communicate claim updates and collection progress to internal stakeholders.
  • Prepare regular reports on outstanding balances, settlements, collection efforts, and payment recovery metrics.
  • Assist with special projects and process improvement initiatives aimed at increasing collections efficiency.


Qualifications

  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.

  • Exceptional organizational and time-management abilities.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
  • Strong problem-solving and negotiation skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, email, and web-based platforms.
  • Reliable internet connection and a quiet home office environment.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in U.S. medical billing, personal injury claims, workers' compensation, or healthcare collections.
  • Experience communicating with insurance adjusters, attorneys, and legal representatives.
  • Familiarity with settlement negotiations and collections processes.
  • Experience using QuickBooks, billing software, EHR/EMR systems, or legal case management platforms.
  • Knowledge of healthcare billing practices, litigation-related claims, and reimbursement processes.

Healthcare, billing, or legal support experience is strongly preferred; however, we welcome candidates with excellent communication skills, strong organizational abilities, and a willingness to learn.
