Position Summary

A Momentum Youth Club 2 Coach assists in the instruction and development of climbers within Momentum's youth programs under the guidance of the Head Coach and direct supervision of the Youth Program Manager (YPM).

Coaches work on a part-time basis, coaching participants in Momentum's Youth Club 2 and other programs. Coaches play a key role in fostering a positive learning environment, building strong relationships with participants and families, and helping young climbers develop both technical climbing skills and confidence.


Staff Expectations

  • Lead by example and embody Momentum's mission, values, and community culture.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and engaging environment for all participants.
  • Maintain open communication with the Youth Program Manager regarding schedules, participant needs, and program events.
  • Attend required trainings, meetings, and professional development opportunities.
  • Collaborate effectively with fellow coaches and staff.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and a positive attitude at all times.


Coaching Responsibilities

  • Provide hands-on climbing instruction and supervision for youth participants.
  • Assist with planning and implementing age-appropriate lessons and activities.
  • Create engaging practices that support skill development while keeping participants motivated and excited to learn.
  • Build an understanding of each participant's abilities, goals, and individual needs.
  • Enforce Momentum policies and climbing standards in a friendly, patient, and respectful manner.
  • Prioritize participant well-being and provide appropriate supervision at all times.
  • Recognize and address unsafe conditions or behaviors and communicate concerns professionally with participants, coaches, and management.
  • Assist with equipment distribution, organization, and storage before and after practices.

Customer Service Expectations

  • Deliver a positive experience for participants and their families.
  • Communicate effectively with parents regarding participant progress and practice highlights.
  • Develop a working knowledge of Momentum programs, services, and products.
  • Represent Momentum professionally and contribute to a welcoming community atmosphere.

Hours and Availability

  • Part-time position.
  • Minimum commitment of 2 shifts per week.
  • Maximum of 16 hours per week.
  • Availability on multiple weekdays preferred.
  • Youth Programs typically operate between 3:30 PM and 6:30 PM on weekdays.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet all of the following requirements to be considered:

  • Must be at least 23 years of age.
  • Must hold current Lead Climb and Lead Belay certifications.
  • Minimum of 2 years of climbing experience.
  • Strong enthusiasm for climbing and youth development.
  • Ability to work effectively with children and teens ages 3–18.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Basic computer proficiency.
  • Ability to adapt to changing circumstances and respond positively to unexpected tasks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience coaching, teaching, mentoring, or working with youth.
  • Experience in bouldering, sport climbing, and traditional climbing.
  • Customer service experience.
  • Experience planning activities, lessons, or events.
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification.

Physical and Environmental Requirements

  • Comfortable working in a busy and often noisy environment.
  • Comfortable speaking to and instructing large groups.
  • Comfortable working at height and moving up and down climbing walls.
  • Ability to stand and move on uneven surfaces for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move up to 50 pounds regularly.
  • Ability to balance, kneel, push, pull, reach, and grasp as needed.
  • Visual ability to assess climbing systems, including harnesses, knots, and belay techniques.
