About the Role:

Director of Engineering – Product Delivery & AI

OrthoFi is seeking an experienced and passionate Director of Engineering who thrives on collaborative problem-solving and innovation. OrthoFi has experienced rapid growth over the last 10+ years, and we are now expanding our engineering organization to meet the demands of a fast-evolving healthcare technology landscape. This role is a unique opportunity to lead both established product delivery teams and a growing AI-focused capability, driving technical excellence across a diverse and distributed organization.

You will work closely with OrthoFi's technical leadership to deliver complex product initiatives while simultaneously building and scaling AI-driven solutions that transform how we serve our customers. Your teams span product delivery, platform engineering, and applied AI — requiring you to be equally fluent in shipping reliable software at scale and incubating new capabilities with a startup mindset.

Responsibilities

Leadership & People Management

  • Provide direct leadership to Engineering Managers and team leads across product delivery and AI teams, including performance management, career development, and employee engagement.
  • Lead and grow a distributed organization spanning onsite, offshore, and contract staff across multiple workstreams.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, psychological safety, and continuous improvement across all teams.
  • Partner with Talent Acquisition to hire strong engineers and managers, building motivated and high-performing teams.

Product Delivery

  • Own end-to-end delivery accountability for product engineering teams, ensuring fast, predictable, and agile execution aligned with customer expectations and business objectives.
  • Collaborate closely with Product Management to guide feature decisions, effort estimations, and roadmap prioritization.
  • Drive consistent rigor in engineering processes — including sprint planning, estimation, dependency management, and release coordination.
  • Manage team budget and staffing, balancing FTE, offshore, and contract resources to optimize delivery capacity.

AI & Innovation

  • Lead the strategy, development, and scaling of OrthoFi's AI engineering team, translating business opportunities into applied AI solutions.
  • Partner with technical leadership and product stakeholders to identify, prioritize, and deliver AI-powered capabilities that create measurable customer and business value.
  • Establish engineering practices appropriate for AI development, including experimentation frameworks, model lifecycle management, and responsible AI principles.
  • Stay current on applied AI trends relevant to healthcare technology and bring forward-looking thinking to OrthoFi's technical strategy.

Platform & Architecture

  • Ensure consistency in software architecture across all teams and workstreams, in partnership with the Architecture team.
  • Provide oversight of platform engineering, DevOps, and database functions to ensure a stable, scalable, and secure foundation.
  • Take accountability for technical decisions including architecture choices, coding standards, development estimations, and progress tracking.
  • Champion engineering excellence through CI/CD practices, test automation, and continuous improvement.

What You Bring:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
  • 15+ years of software engineering experience, including hands-on coding and architectural design.
  • 10+ years of people management experience, with 3+ years of experience managing managers
  • Proven track record managing and delivering complex software products on time and within budget.
  • Experience building or scaling AI/ML-powered products or teams, with an understanding of the unique challenges of applied AI development.
  • Expertise in Agile development methodologies and tools.
  • Strong understanding of software development principles, processes, and best practices.
  • Experience managing distributed teams including offshore and contract staff.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities, with a focus on driving innovative solutions.
  • Familiarity with full-stack development, cloud technologies, infrastructure, and DevOps practices (C#, React/Angular 2+, SQL Server, AWS).
  • Demonstrated success fostering engineering excellence through Agile methodologies, CI/CD practices, test automation (TDD a plus), and continuous improvement.
  • Strategic thinking with the ability to align technical initiatives — including emerging AI capabilities — with business objectives.

Compensation: $200,000 - $220,000 range 

**Please note that the compensation information that follows is a good faith estimate for Colorado-based hires only and is provided with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act and Equal Pay Transparency Rules.**
