About the role
Reports to: Director of Finance
Salary: $24–$26/hour, based on experience, plus bonus and benefits (see below). This is a non-exempt position; overtime during close periods is authorized and paid at applicable rates. Performance-based compensation reviews are conducted as responsibilities expand.
Overview
Year one is about mastering AP and learning NetSuite. From there, the work expands into reconciliations, ownership of close tasks, and financial reporting, with a corresponding title progression. How fast you move is a function of what you demonstrate, not a fixed calendar.
We're investing heavily in this position because we see it as the beginning of a long-term career within Sports Basement. Our hope is to hire someone excited to grow into broader accounting and finance responsibilities over time. If you're looking for a place to build a career—not just your next job—we'd love to meet you.
Sports Basement offers a fun environment for staff to share their love of the outdoors with co-workers and customers, along with a range of unique benefits that let our people live healthy, active lives.
This role is the entry point into Sports Basement's finance organization. You'll start in Accounts Payable because that's where you learn how the business actually works — every invoice tells you something about a vendor relationship, a store's buying patterns, or a process that needs fixing. Our Controller is building out the finance team, and we're hiring this position with the expectation that the right person grows into progressively more responsibility over the next several years.
We process thousands of invoices a year across inventory and non-inventory vendors, and getting them right is what keeps product flowing into sixteen stores. It's high-volume work, and it's also the best accounting education you can get.
Location and Schedule
Based full-time out of our Corporate HQ in San Francisco's beautiful Presidio. Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 5:30pm. Occasional extended hours during month-end and year-end close.

About Sports Basement
Since 1998, Sports Basement has been more than a sporting goods store - we're a community hub offering the best brands at Basement prices, with giving back baked into our DNA. What started as a weekend-only shop in a San Francisco warehouse has grown into multiple fully stocked Bay Area locations, several newly opened Southern California stores, in-house snow and bike shops, a thriving rentals program, and a robust ecommerce website at sportsbasement.com. We've come a long way, and we couldn't be prouder of the company we've become.
Our Mission
We're here to help our communities shine a little brighter, live a little greener, and make the outdoors more fun and accessible for everyone. Because your gear is more than just stuff, and we're more than just a store.
Our Core Values
A lot of companies say they care about customers, community, and the environment. We do too - but what sets us apart is how we actually live those values every day. A few principles that guide us:
