About the Role

The Manufacturing Engineer - Machining & Fabrication will be a key player in setting up and improving our machining and precision-manufacturing processes. The Engineer is responsible for supporting the manufacturing of our BESS (Torus Pulse) and FESS (Torus Spin) products, with a focus on machined components, fixture/workholding design and fabrication, dimensional quality, and process automation. The role is responsible for designing and building fixtures and workholding, developing and optimizing machining processes, establishing inspection methods, automating manufacturing, and supporting adjacent fabrication processes. As a start up, there will be times when this role will require work outside its typical duties.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and fabricate fixtures, jigs, and workholding to support machining, assembly, and inspection operations.
  • Develop, optimize, and troubleshoot CNC machining processes and programs (milling, turning, and related operations) for production parts.
  • Specify, source, and implement machine tools, workholding, tooling, automated machinery, and robotics.
  • Establish and maintain inspection methods — CMM programming, GD&T interpretation, and gauge design — to assure part conformance.
  • Evaluate manufacturing processes by designing and conducting research programs, including capability studies (Cpk) and process validation.
  • Develop manufacturing processes by studying product requirements, researching testing and measurement methods, and conferring with equipment and tooling vendors.
  • Improve manufacturing efficiency by analyzing and planning workflow, machine utilization, space requirements, and equipment layout.
  • Assure product and process quality by designing inspection and testing methods, including in-process and automated inspection.
  • Identify opportunities for automation within machining, inspection, assembly, and material-handling processes.
  • Develop, program, and implement automation systems (PLC-, PC-, or microcontroller-based) to improve safety, quality, and throughput.
  • Provide manufacturing decision-making information by calculating production, labor, and material costs.
  • Lead in the "Design for Manufacturing" and continuous improvement process through the assigned product lines, with an emphasis on machinability, fixturing, and inspectability.
  • Support product development activities.
  • Complete other tasks as necessary.

Required Experience

  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing best practices, including Lean Manufacturing principles.
  • Experience designing and fabricating fixtures, jigs, and/or workholding using SolidWorks.
  • Hands-on experience building and fitting up fixtures and tooling on the shop floor.
  • Experience developing and optimizing CNC machining processes.
  • Experience designing modular or quick-change workholding systems.
  • Hands-on machining, welding/fabricating, or CNC programming experience preferred.
  • Experience with metrology equipment and methods (CMM, hand gauges, etc).
  • Experience with industrial automation tools such as PLCs, HMIs, sensors, and motion systems.
  • Experience optimizing production processes.
  • Experience integrating robotics, automated inspection/test equipment, or control systems into manufacturing environments.
  • Manufacturing/Industrial/Mechanical Engineering degree or related field is required.
  • 2-5+ years related experience (or equivalent).

Location + Travel The role is based in our GigaOne Salt Lake Headquarters Warehouse, and our South Salt Lake R&D Location, both located in Salt Lake City, UT.
Schedule Full-Time, Salaried

Compensation $80,000 - $130,000 (Note: We have the flexibility to hire at different levels, which may impact the  corresponding pay range.)

Physical Requirements 

  • Must have the ability to safely lift and move objects weighing up to 50 lbs. 
  • Must be capable of standing, bending, and executing repetitive tasks for prolonged periods of time.
  • Ability to read, identify, observe and recognize details, color-coding and fine print at close range on associated engineering drawings.
  • Ability to don personal protective equipment to include, but not limited to, respiratory protective equipment with proper seal, coveralls, ear protection, gloves, eye protection & safety helmet. 
  • Ability to observe, detect and respond to audible and visual machine malfunction warnings.
  • Ability to communicate information so others can understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
  • Must report to work reliably and with the ability to use full and unimpaired skills and judgment to safely execute your job.
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English required.
