This role will focus on magnet power supplies, energy handling, protection systems, instrumentation interfaces, and system-level integration for superconducting magnet assemblies. The successful candidate will work closely with magnet, power electronics, controls, cryogenics, mechanical, and systems engineering teams to deliver reliable, safe, and high-performance magnet systems. You will:

  • Design, specify, integrate, and support magnet power supply systems for superconducting magnet applications
  • Develop and review requirements for magnet electrical systems, including power conversion, energy extraction, grounding, protection, and monitoring
  • Apply energy handling expertise to support safe charging, discharge, dump, fault response, and stored-energy management strategies
  • Support from an energy handling perspective the quench detection, fast fault detection, safe-state behavior, and magnet protection architecture development
  • Create technical documentation, including electrical specifications, interface control documents, test procedures, commissioning plans, and verification records
  • Lead or support system integration, acceptance testing, troubleshooting, and commissioning of magnet power supply and energy handling equipment
  • Work with instrumentation and controls teams to define sensing, data acquisition, controls interfaces, alarms, interlocks, and operational limits for magnet systems
  • Collaborate with external suppliers and internal stakeholders to evaluate equipment, review designs, resolve technical issues, and support procurement decisions
  • Contribute to hazard analysis, failure mode reviews, and design practices that meet safety, reliability, and regulatory expectations for fusion environments

What you’ll need:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, Applied Physics, or a related technical field
  • 5+ years of experience designing, integrating, testing, or commissioning electrical systems in complex technical environments
  • Hands-on experience with magnet power supplies, high-current or high-voltage power systems, or large-scale power conversion equipment
  • Experience with energy handling, stored-energy management, discharge circuits, dump resistors, protection systems, or comparable pulsed-power applications
  • Working knowledge of grounding, isolation, interlocks, electrical safety, fault protection, and instrumentation for high-energy electrical systems
  • Experience developing requirements, specifications, interface definitions, test plans, and verification documentation
  • Familiarity with superconducting magnets, cryogenic systems, fusion systems, accelerator systems, MRI systems, or other large scientific equipment is desirable
  • Experience using lab and field test equipment such as oscilloscopes, power analyzers, data acquisition systems, and high-voltage or high-current measurement tools
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary engineering environment with internal teams, external partners, and equipment suppliers
