Job Summary

The Integration Engineer will be responsible for developing, implementing, monitoring, and supporting interfaces that connect healthcare organizations and their EHR systems to UHIN’s health information exchange solutions. This includes onboarding new data sources and consumers, configuring and maintaining interfaces, troubleshooting integration issues, supporting the Help Desk, and working directly with the technical teams of UHIN members and partners. Depending on project needs, the Integration Engineer may also support system and interface migrations by developing an understanding of existing environments, interfaces, and data flows; identifying migration requirements and dependencies; and working with customers and internal teams to successfully transition data sources and interfaces to new platforms.

Qualifications - Education, Experience and Skills


Required qualifications: 

  • Experience with NextGen Mirth Connect or another enterprise integration engine
  • Experience configuring and troubleshooting HL7v2 interfaces including ADT, ORU, and MDM
  • Experience configuring and troubleshooting HL7 FHIR, and C-CDA interfaces
  • Experience working with EHR/EMR systems and an understanding of the healthcare domain
  • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills, including the ability to investigate complex interface and data issues and identify appropriate solutions.
  •  Extensive experience with connector/interface documentation and transformation documentation
  •  Experience with relational databases including SQL Server, and PostgreSQL
  • Experience with Enterprise Master Patient Index (EMPI) concepts and/or software.
  • Strong customer-facing communication skills, with the ability to work directly with technical and non-technical stakeholders, lead technical discussions, communicate issues clearly, and coordinate implementation activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage assigned technical implementations, track tasks and dependencies, and follow issues through resolution.
  • Experience creating and maintaining interface documentation, including transformations, configurations, and implementation procedures.

Preferred qualifications: 

  • Mirth Connect experience strongly preferred
  • Experience with Agile project management
  •  Experience with any scripting language
  •  Basic understanding of web technologies and protocols, including HTTP/HTTPS, REST APIs, and web services
  •  Linux familiarity
  • Experience with Google BigQuery

Education:   

BA/BS in IT or healthcare discipline

Equivalent combination of education and/or work experience in related field may be substituted

2+ yrs experience in healthcare and interface development

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to quiet.  This position involves being in an inside onsite or remote office and working in an individual cubicle/home office in a professional work environment.

Job Responsibilities & Duties

  1. Support UHIN’s mission and contribute to developing and maintaining the trust of the communities and organizations we serve.
  2. Proactively monitor the HIE environment to ensure that all systems are working properly.  When errors occur, troubleshoot to trace the root cause, coordinate resolution, and ensure appropriate message reprocessing when necessary.
  3. Serve as the primary technical point of contact for assigned integrations, working directly with customers, vendors, and other external partners throughout the technical implementation process.
  4. Take ownership of assigned technical implementations by tracking activities, deliverables, dependencies, risks, outstanding issues, and next steps through completion.
  5. Maintain interface code in accordance with established development and coding standards, including appropriate version control, documentation, review, and removal of obsolete or unused code.
  6. Document processes, data flows, onboarding processes and technical specifications.
  7. Work with EHR/EMR vendors to connect new data sources and change system settings or features.
  8.  Configure inbound and outbound interfaces for HL7v2, C-CDA, and HL7 FHIR transactions to the HIE environment.
  9.  Implement project plans according to functional requirement specifications, deadlines and additional detail as needed for clinical systems testing, implementation and operation; communicating with internal staff and external vendors as needed.
  10. Support migrations of existing interfaces and data sources between systems or platforms when required. This may include assessing existing interfaces and data flows, identifying migration requirements and dependencies, coordinating with participating organizations, and validating successful migration to the new environment.
  11. Assist in working with the vendors of our clinical products, to develop statements of work as needed for new use cases, setting maintenance schedules, and ensuring high availability.
  12. Perform scheduled upgrades to clinical services software as needed.
  13. Develop and ensure tracking and reporting on performance and uptime.
  14. Follow and develop processes for testing and quality assurance (QA) for connectivity and data quality.
  15. Coordinate across teams to ensure a high degree of service and valued functionality are provided.
  16. Interact effectively with internal staff and users to assure a high level of Customer Satisfaction while maintaining scope and budgets.
  17. Work with the integration team to optimize and organize data source onboarding as well as a viable preventative maintenance process.
  18. Use SQL to help with data analysis to improve data quality and data completeness.
  19. Develop and maintain a continuous improvement mindset around maintenance, support, documentation and process improvement.
  20. Other duties as assigned.
