Walden Robotics, Inc.

Member of Technical Staff – Senior Engineer, Realtime Networking

Position Summary:

You will own the networking that our robots depend on—most critically the low-latency wireless link that carries teleoperation between operator and robot, and more broadly the on-robot, building-wide, and infrastructure networking that keeps a deployed fleet connected and responsive. Teleoperation lives or dies on this link: it must deliver video, audio, and control with minimal latency and maximum reliability across real, messy industrial RF environments. You'll design, build, and harden that network end-to-end—from site-wide wireless infrastructure and radio topology through the transport and QoS software that runs over it—and you'll make it robust enough to trust with a robot doing real physical work.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Teleop Network Link: Own the low-latency wireless link between operator and robot—topology, radio selection and configuration, and relentless optimization of latency, jitter, and reliability.
  • Real-Time Transport: Design and tune the transport and streaming software (WebRTC and similar) that carries control, video, and audio, making the right tradeoffs between latency, throughput, and robustness.
  • Building-Wide Infrastructure Design: Design and deploy the network infrastructure across customer and deployment sites—access point placement and coverage planning, backhaul, VLANs/segmentation, and the physical and logical topology that keeps a facility's robots reliably connected.
  • Robot & Infrastructure Networking: Architect and maintain networking on the robot and across deployment sites—wireless infrastructure, connectivity, and the configuration that keeps robots reliably online.
  • RF & Environment Robustness: Characterize and improve performance in real industrial RF environments, handling interference, roaming, coverage, and spectrum challenges.
  • Resilience & Failover: Ensure networking degrades gracefully and recovers cleanly under loss, congestion, or coverage gaps, in coordination with the teleop and safety systems.
  • Diagnostics & Tooling: Build tools to measure, monitor, and debug network performance in the lab and in the field.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with teleoperation, VR, and infrastructure engineers to define interfaces and hit end-to-end latency and reliability targets.

Required Qualifications:

  • Real-Time Networking Expertise: Proven experience building low-latency, real-time networked systems where latency and reliability are critical.
  • Networking Fundamentals: Deep understanding of networking across the stack—IP, transport protocols, routing, QoS, and the causes of latency and jitter.
  • Wireless Understanding: Solid working knowledge of wireless networking (Wi-Fi and related technologies) and the realities of RF in real environments, even if your primary strength is software.
  • Real-Time Media/Transport: Hands-on experience with real-time streaming or transport protocols such as WebRTC, RTP, or custom low-latency transports.
  • Systems Software: Strong C/C++ and/or Python skills, with experience implementing and debugging networked software on Linux.
  • Field Debugging: Strong ability to diagnose network problems across software and wireless boundaries using packet capture, network analysis, and RF tooling.
  • Ownership: Track record of taking networked systems from design through deployment and real-world validation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experience with industrial or point-to-point wireless systems (e.g., URWB), Wi-Fi 6/6E, or managed cellular connectivity.
  • Experience designing building-wide or site-wide network infrastructure (coverage planning, structured cabling/backhaul, enterprise AP deployments).
  • Experience with antenna selection, placement, and RF planning for reliable coverage.
  • Familiarity with teleoperation, remote driving, or other latency-critical human-in-the-loop systems.
  • Experience with network QoS, traffic shaping, and prioritization for mixed real-time traffic.
  • Exposure to time synchronization, DDS, or other real-time middleware.
