Today our group of companies also develop and operate electricity generation, energy equipment rentals, and commercial metering services both in Peterborough and other areas of the province.   

This position works in the Water Distribution Department, which will be operated by the City of Peterborough as of April 1, 2025. This position is a member of the IBEW Union Local 636.

About the role

The Service & Maintenance Operator performs a variety of skilled utility maintenance, repair and construction duties associated with a water distribution system and wastewater collection system. The position requires incumbents to be multi skilled and certified on all systems that they maintain. The Service and Maintenance Operator will also be required to perform various sampling, maintenance, clerical and customer service as required. Work ranges from labour activities to skilled tasks requiring physical exertion to varying degrees of manipulative skills involving the use of a variety of hand and power tools and the routine operation of trucks, backhoes and related utility maintenance equipment. Work on utility systems requires employees to ensure safety during repairs to system components and sanitize water distribution lines before placing them back in service. All work shall be completed in accordance with industry standards for water distribution, and wastewater collection systems. Work is normally performed as part of a crew under the direction of a supervisor, although employees periodically can and will operate independently. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion for conformance with instructions and work standards. This position will be required to be on call on a rotational schedule.


What you'll do


  1. Operation, maintenance and construction of Class 2 water distribution and Class 1 wastewater collection facilities.
  2. Overall Responsible Operator (ORO) for Class 2 Distribution System and Class 1 Wastewater Collection System while performing on call duties
  3. Operator In Charge (OIC) for Class 2 Distribution System and Class 1 Wastewater Collection System.
  4. Provide relief OIC Class 2 Distribution System (Lakefield) as required for planned and emergency duties.
  5. Installation, replacement and maintenance of water meters.
  6. Operation of a variety of specialized equipment related to water distribution, wastewater collection operation, maintenance and construction including installation, replacement and maintenance of water meters.
  7. A variety of standby, overtime, and emergency call-out duties as required.
  8. Perform various sampling, maintenance, customer contact, and clerical duties as required.
  9. Responsible for knowledge of safely working around other utilities underground plant.
  10. Installation of sewer services on Public property.
  11. Extend water mains or complete repairs to existing system.
  12. Ensure water mains, hydrant laterals and service lines are properly maintained.
  13. Installing and relaying of water services.
  14. Extend water mains or complete repairs to existing system.
  15. Ensure water mains, laterals and service lines are properly maintained.
  16. Ensure wastewater collection mains and service laterals are properly maintained including flushing, thawing or unblocking when necessary.
  17. Maintain valves and meters for various utility systems.
  18. Conduct valve, hydrant and flushing operations as required by company policy.
  19. Perform periodic scheduled maintenance activities for the water and wastewater systems.
  20. Perform inspections of system components, relay results of the inspections to supervisors and recommend future project requirements.
  21. Responsible for the personal safety and the safety of others that is dependent upon their actions. Report hazards and unsafe acts or conditions encountered on the job to fellow workers and supervisors. Responsible for having a working knowledge of all applicable safety legislation pertaining to the job.
  22. Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Successful completion of Class 3 Water Distribution & Supply and Class 1 Wastewater Collection licences through the Ministry of Environment. Water Meter Installer Certificate.


Experience operating a Class 2 Water Distribution System, Class 2 Water Distribution & Supply System and a Class 1 Wastewater Collection System.


Candidates with OITs will be considered and paid at an apprentice rate.


  1. Demonstrated working experience in construction and maintenance of water distribution equipment.
  2. Working knowledge of water distribution system operations including repair or replacement of valves, hydrants, pipe, and service line connections to the water distribution mains, and various piping systems and equipment.
  3. Knowledge of water distribution system disinfection practices, flow testing and maintenance of system components.
  4. Working knowledge of wastewater collection system operations including repair and maintenance of collection system mains, main flushing procedures, repair and installation of service connections.
  5. Working knowledge of meter types, parts and components and equipment and tools required for programming and troubleshooting meter issues.
  6. Able to work alone and with minimum supervision and in a team environment.
  7. Demonstrated ability to perform routine water quality analyses.
  8. Familiarity with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition Systems.
  9. Knowledge of applicable and current MOE rules & regulations, and Occupational Health & Safety Act.
  10. Demonstrated willingness to work extended emergency and planned overtime hours when required.
  11. Must be able to work outside in a variety of environmental conditions.
  12. Must reside within 30 minutes of the Main Office (1867 Ashburnham Drive, Peterborough, Ontario) according to residency requirement practice H24-07.
  13. Working knowledge and experience using computer hardware tools and software applications.
  14. Demonstrated excellent attendance record.
  15. Demonstrated excellent safety record and attitude.
  16. Valid Class DZ driver’s licence and good driving record.
  17. Ability to meet the Physical Demands Analysis (physical fitness test may be required).
