About the role
The Supervisor, Generation Operations is responsible for the supervision and coordination of construction, maintenance, and operational activities for generation facilities and associated equipment. The role ensures safe, reliable, and compliant operation through effective scheduling, deployment of internal staff and contractors, completion of required documentation, and adherence to departmental work plans.
The Supervisor supports staff recruitment and training, regulatory compliance, and the integration and operation of SCADA systems. This position promotes a strong safety culture and ensures that all work and safety-related procedures and documentation are followed.
What you'll do
Strategic & Planning
- Provide input into the development of business plans including significant and ongoing operations and maintenance initiatives, changes and capital projects;
- Monitor and keep appraised of legislated changes, assess the impacts of change and communicate as required.
Operational Management
- Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise, and review the work of the internal bargaining unit staff and external contractors in the maintenance and operation of the generating stations and associated equipment;
- Oversee the corrective and preventative maintenance of all electrical and mechanical systems;
- Ensure that the generating stations continuously operate and they meet or exceed operating requirements;
- Coordinate outages, returns to service, and operational changes.
- Maintenance planning for various Generation sites including: creation of work orders, coordination of service contractors, staff planning, ensuring parts are available for work.
- Enforce safe work practices/procedures. Assist in development and implementation of departmental safety programs and procedures to ensure that the staff have a safe and productive work environment.
- Research, evaluate and recommend innovative and best practices and methods in operation and maintenance efficiency;
- Work closely with contractors and obtain quotes for materials and services necessary for maintenance and operations;
- Manage small operating and capital projects coordinate operations with Capex work to minimize production impact
- Contribute to the development of the department operating budget. Regularly monitor expenditures to meet budget requirements;
- In conjunction with other supervisory staff, plan and allocate work to assigned staff; monitor/inspect the work; correct as required; report progress, provide technical guidance and direction for issues as required;
- Administer/enforce policies, practices, operating procedures and the collective agreement;
- Review operating reports and provide updates to the department manager;
- Assist in the development and communication of departmental practices;
- Participate in the recruitment, coaching and development of staff to optimize individual and team performance;
- Work with a multi-disciplinary team to support construction, commissioning, grid connection, and SCADA integration projects within established timelines and budgets. Investigate and respond to escalated customer concerns related to generation operations;
- Respond to emergency situations as required.
Administrative
- Ensure that all required administrative support and required documentation is complete and correct with respect to the department functions.
- Complete and/or approve staff daily time sheets.
- Provide and coordinate staff training to ensure safe and efficient performance.
- Promote and participate in the Company’s Health and Safety program through documentation, communication, training and follow-up on all health and safety incidents, and identified hazards, and
- Various other duties as assigned.

The Supervisor works under the general direction of the Manager, Generation Operations, with latitude for independent decision-making within established policies, procedures, and collective agreements. Complex, high-risk, or budget-significant decisions are escalated as required.
Qualifications
Advanced (College Diploma, Certificate or Trade ) discipline: Journeyperson Electrician or Power Engineering or related technical field.
A minimum of five (5) years of experience in the operation and maintenance of generating stations or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
A minimum of 3 years experience supervising in a unionized environment and demonstrated ability to motivate, lead, work co-operatively and promote a professional multi-disciplinary team;
Technical Skills
- Excellent working knowledge of the Electrical Safety Authority, the Occupational Health & Safety Act, Utility Work Protection Code, WHMIS, CPR, First Aid, and other applicable regulations and legislation pertaining to the electrical industry;
- Familiar with principles of supervision, training and performance evaluation and employee development.
- Maintains composure and exercises sound judgment in high-pressure situations.
- Excellent working knowledge and experience using MSOffice suite applications and working with SCADA and PLC’s;
- Ability to provide ongoing mentoring, coaching, and constructive feedback to support employee development and performance.
- Demonstrated ability to lead teams in a safety-critical environment. Able to work collaboratively with internal and external partners
- Exhibits strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
- Valid driver’s license with an excellent driving record; and
- Ability to meet the Physical Demands Analysis.
Additional Details
- This is an on-site field-based position requiring regular travel within the City of Peterborough and occasional travel throughout the Kawartha Lakes region.
