Job Summary
Quantum Fulfillment Services is a yearbook and photobook printer and publisher supporting high-volume seasonal production. We are seeking an experienced Digital Printing Department Manager to lead a multi-technology digital print operation.
This role oversees continuous-feed inkjet, sheetfed inkjet, toner-based digital presses, large-format proofing systems, and prepress operations, ensuring consistent quality, efficient throughput, and seamless integration with bindery and fulfillment. The ideal candidate brings strong technical expertise, color management leadership, and the ability to manage aggressive seasonal timelines.
Key Responsibilities
Production, Platform & Prepress Management
- Oversee daily production across multiple digital platforms, including:
- Océ ProStream 1000 (continuous-feed inkjet)
- Canon VarioPRINT iX-series (sheetfed inkjet)
- Ricoh Pro C9500 (toner-based digital press)
- Epson SureColor P9000 (large-format proofing and specialty output)
- Manage prepress operations, including:
- Imposition setup for various press platforms
- Preparing and configuring jobs for press-specific requirements
- Setting up new products, formats, substrates, and workflows
- Ensuring files are optimized for resolution, color space, and finishing
- Balance workloads between inkjet and toner devices to maximize throughput, cost efficiency, and turnaround time
- Manage substrate selection, press compatibility, and run strategies for covers, interiors, proofs, and specialty pages
- Ensure production schedules align with bindery and finishing capacity
Color Management & Quality Control
- Maintain color consistency across multiple print technologies and paper types
- Enforce standardized color management workflows, including ICC profiles, calibration routines, linearization, and proofing
- Oversee contract and soft proofing using the Epson P9000 and approved proofing standards
- Approve press output and troubleshoot color, density, registration, and image quality issues across all platforms
Team Leadership & Staffing
- Lead, train, and schedule operators specializing in inkjet, toner, proofing, and prepress systems
- Develop cross-trained team members capable of supporting multiple press platforms and workflows
- Manage staffing plans to support peak yearbook production cycles, overtime, and shift coverage
- Foster a culture of accountability, safety, quality, and continuous improvement
Equipment, Maintenance & Vendor Coordination
- Coordinate preventive maintenance and service calls with Canon, Ricoh, Epson, and Océ/Canon service teams
- Monitor press performance metrics, consumable usage, and uptime across all platforms
- Maintain inventory of inks, toners, paper, coatings, and critical spare parts
- Recommend equipment upgrades, workflow enhancements, and capacity expansions
Workflow Optimization & Reporting
- Analyze production KPIs including throughput, spoilage, reprints, uptime, and cost per book
- Implement process improvements to optimize inkjet vs. toner utilization
- Collaborate with IT and Prepress on RIPs, automation, imposition workflows, and job routing
- Prepare production and performance reports for leadership
Cross-Department Collaboration
- Work closely with Prepress to ensure files are correctly built and optimized for each press platform
- Partner with Bindery and Fulfillment to ensure smooth downstream processing
- Support Customer Service and Sales with technical guidance for custom products and special requests
- Participate in seasonal planning, forecasting, and capacity management
Qualifications
Required:
- 5+ years of experience in digital print manufacturing
- 3+ years managing high-volume, multi-press production environments
- Hands-on experience with inkjet and toner-based digital presses
- Strong knowledge of color management across multiple platforms
- Experience with prepress operations, imposition, and job setup
- Proven leadership experience in deadline-driven production environments
- Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills
Preferred:
- Direct experience with Océ ProStream, Canon VarioPRINT iX, Ricoh Pro, or Epson proofing systems
- Experience in yearbook, photobook, or book manufacturing
- Familiarity with RIPs (PRISMAsync, Fiery, or similar) and MIS systems
- Lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement training

The pay range for this role is:
65,000 - 80,000 USD per year (Everett)
