Deputy Director for Voter Protection

ABOUT RELENTLESS

Relentless builds technology and programs to activate low-turnout voters and unlock political power. Our core program, the Rally Organizing model, is a civic education, persuasion, and mobilization program that compensates low-turnout voters for their time as they become Voting Ambassadors in their communities. Rally, Relentless’s flagship platform, allows campaigns and organizations to relationally organize at scale, resolve fractured and anonymized identities across online communities, and build progressive digital infrastructure that meets the moment we’re in.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Deputy Director for Voter Protection owns what we know about voting and how we communicate it. Your central responsibility will be building and maintaining a single repository of accurate, current, plain-language voting information covering every state we operate in, which powers our vote plan builder and everything participants see in Rally. When a participant asks whether they can still mail their ballot, what ID they need, or where their early vote site is, the answer traces back to work you did.

That also makes you the approver on anything we publish that touches voting. Event scripts, FAQs, saved replies, and participant-facing materials come to you before they go out, and you're reviewing them for accuracy.

With support from our legal team, you're the person who catches changes to voting rules, updates our guidance, and flags when something matters enough that we should push it out proactively rather than wait to be asked. You'll own the voter education calendar that sets when guidance needs to change – for example, when we stop recommending that people mail a ballot back.

This is a role where you’ll build the system and then run it. Ahead of the program you'll build out our voter education content from the ground up, covering state and county rules, deadlines, ID requirements, and mail and early vote procedures, and to set the calendar that tells us when guidance needs to change. Once events are running at volume, you shift into live operations: captaining the Voter Protection channel in Slack, triaging questions in real time during events, deciding what we can answer and what gets escalated, and making sure everyone else fielding voting questions is trained and knows where to look to find the answer.

To succeed in this role, you don't have to be a lawyer and you don't have to know all the answers off the top of your head. The most important thing is that you're thoughtful, you care very much about every single voter you get to have an impact on, and that you will rigorously and creatively work to get accurate answers to voting questions, even if that means getting on the phone with the Secretary of State's office or reaching out to a voter protection legal organization. This role needs to balance a tricky (but powerful!) combination of speed, scale, and accuracy. It’s not just that you’re down to spend hours calling government offices to figure out an edge case – it’s that once you do it once, you’ll train our team in how to do that too, so we can scale your rigor in a very fast-paced, high-volume environment.

This is a full-time cycle role with an end date of November 15th, 2026.

DETAILS & COMPENSATION

Location: Remote

Compensation: $7,000/mo (August–November 15, 2026)

Reports to: Partnerships Director

Schedule: Full-time

Hours expectations: This role requires a flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends, to accommodate recruitment and event volume. We anticipate a six day workweek in the final stretch, starting in October and running through Election Day.

JOB DUTIES

  • Own and maintain the voter education repository end to end. Build the initial content for every program state, manage the update workflow from research through fact-check and approval, and confirm changes sync correctly and display accurately on the participant side in Rally.
  • Build and own the voter education calendar: registration deadlines, mail ballot request and return dates, early vote windows, and Election Day, and our schedule and cadence for communicating about these things to voters. Serve as the source of truth on voting rules and process  for both staff and participants. Track changes in law, procedure, and litigation that affect our program states, translate statute and administrative guidance into plain language people actually use, and know where the line sits between info we can provide and what needs to be escalated.
  • Review and approve any script, FAQ, saved reply, or piece of participant-facing content that touches voting before it goes out.
  • Vet and maintain the list of approved external resources staff can share without additional approval, such as Secretary of State sites, county election office pages, and the Election Protection hotline.
  • Create and oversee participant-facing voter education materials: FAQs, one-pagers, and content, in partnership with the events and content teams.
  • Act as voter protection captain in Slack during events, coordinating real-time voter education support, answering questions live, and owning the escalation path when a question can't be resolved in the moment.
  • Own the intake and escalation process for voter education questions from participants, prioritizing by urgency and resolving directly, including calling county election offices on a voter's behalf to make sure they get the most accurate answer.
  • Partner with the participant experience and partnerships teams to make sure voter education is built into event curriculum, inbox templates, and staff training.
  • Take on additional responsibilities as they arise, with the expectation that your day-to-day mix of work will shift as the program moves from build to peak season.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

We don't expect any one person to bring everything below, and you certainly don't need to check every box to apply. If some of this describes you and the work excites you, we'd love to hear from you.

  • 3–4 years of experience in digital organizing, voter protection, voter education, research, election administration, or voting rights advocacy.
  • Working knowledge of voting rights law and know-your-rights protocols, with the ability to read statute or official election guidance and translate it accurately into plain language.
  • Experience managing content in a CMS or similar tool, and comfort working in structured content systems, trackers, and databases.
  • Demonstrated judgment and precision — you're comfortable saying "I don't know yet, let me confirm," and you'd rather escalate than guess.
  • Strong plain-language writing skills, especially for audiences who may be voting for the first time or navigating an unfamiliar process.
  • Experience training, coaching, or serving as the escalation point for frontline staff or volunteers.
  • Comfortable serving as a go-to resource in Slack during live, fast-moving events, including making judgment calls under time pressure.
  • Existing relationships with or experience working alongside voter protection or state voting rights organizations are a plus.
  • Comfort building a function that doesn't exist yet — this work is currently unowned, and you'll be designing the systems as much as running them.
  • Spanish/English bilingual skills are a plus.
  • A strong commitment to non-partisan accuracy in voter education, and comfort holding that line firmly even when a program is moving fast.
  • Access to a computer, reliable internet, and a quiet workspace for live event support.
  • Availability to flex hours during high-volume recruitment and event periods, including some evenings and weekends as we approach November.
