About the role


We are looking for a Senior Controls Engineer to join our team at Riot Data Centers. The Senior Controls Engineer will establish standards, specifications, and approval frameworks for Building Management Systems (BMS), Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS), and SCADA infrastructure that ensures uptime across our portfolio. This role is for exceptional engineers who excel as technical gatekeepers - reviewing, approving, and guiding external design teams, consultants, and contractors to deliver world-class controls infrastructure supporting AI/ML workloads and mission-critical operations.


You'll be the technical conscience of $100M+ projects, ensuring every control system’s design meets Riot's exacting standards while driving innovation in automation, cybersecurity, and intelligent building systems. Additionally, you will support and help develop a high-performing team of controls engineers, setting clear expectations, guiding their professional development, and fostering an environment of technical excellence and team success.


This position will be based in our Denver office.


Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain design standards for controls systems
  • Review and approve designs, specifications, and programming for BMS, EPMS, and SCADA
  • Lead technical risk assessments, QA/QC, and commissioning approvals
  • Oversee integration across mechanical, electrical, and IT/network systems
  • Provide mentorship and technical leadership to the engineering team

Required Skills

  • Strong expertise with BMS, EPMS, SCADA platforms and industrial protocols (BACnet, Modbus, MQTT, OPC-UA)
  • Proven success leading design reviews, vendor/consultant management, and large-scale project approvals
  • Ability to communicate technical decisions clearly to stakeholders and mentor team members

Education and Experience 

  • Bachelor of Science in Controls Engineering or related field from ABET-accredited program
  • 10+ years of experience in controls engineering; 5+ in mission-critical/data center environments
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license preferred
  • Advanced certifications in controls systems, cybersecurity, or industrial automation preferred

Compensation and Benefits 

  • $140,000-$170,000 base salary commensurate with experience, plus bonus and equity
