About the role

Riot Platforms is seeking a visionary and strategic Director, Technical Operations to lead the development, implementation, and continuous optimization of technology solutions that support and enhance our digital infrastructure and operational efficiency. This role is pivotal in ensuring our mining operations and facilities are equipped with the most advanced, reliable, and scalable technologies. The Director will work cross-functionally with Engineering, IT, Operations, and Executive Leadership to deliver value through innovation, automation, and data-driven decision-making. 


Essential Functions 

  • Lead the strategy, design, and execution of operations technology initiatives across all Riot Platforms mining facilities. 
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of SCADA, industrial IoT (IIoT), and automation systems to ensure peak operational performance. 
  • Evaluate and integrate emerging technologies that align with Riot’s growth and sustainability goals. 
  • Collaborate with engineering and data teams to drive insights from machines and process data to improve uptime, energy efficiency, and throughput. 
  • Establish and enforce cybersecurity and data governance standards for operational systems and infrastructure. 
  • Manage vendor relationships, technology procurement, and system integration projects to ensure cost-effective and scalable solutions. 
  • Build and lead a high-performing team of operations technologists, controls engineers, and support staff. 
  • Develop KPIs and dashboards to monitor system performance, maintenance schedules, and real-time operational status. 
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable safety, environmental, and regulatory standards for operational technologies. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Deep understanding of industrial systems, automation, controls (e.g., PLCs, SCADA), and industrial networking protocols. 
  • Strong knowledge of data acquisition, real-time monitoring, and analytics platforms. 
  • Proficiency in integrating IT and OT environments securely and efficiently. 
  • Demonstrated leadership in deploying and managing IIoT technologies at scale. 
  • Excellent project management skills with the ability to prioritize, budget, and deliver complex initiatives. 
  • Exceptional communication skills and the ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams. 
  • Strategic mindset with a hands-on approach to problem-solving and continuous improvement. 

Education and Experience 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field required; Master’s degree preferred. 
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in industrial operations technology or a similar field, with at least 5 years in a leadership role. 
  • Proven track record of leading technology initiatives in high-uptime environments such as data centers, manufacturing, or energy sectors. 
  • Experience in Bitcoin mining, data center operations, or energy infrastructure is highly desirable.
