About the role

The Risk team is seeking a Lead Credit Underwriter to serve as the on-the-ground underwriting lead in India. This individual will operate as a senior individual contributor (IC), responsible for conducting complex customer-level credit risk assessments and driving high-quality underwriting decisions across multiple Rippling products — including, but not limited to, the Spend Management corporate card portfolio, Employer of Record, Payroll, Bill Pay, and related financial offerings.

This role is critical to maintaining strong credit discipline as Rippling continues to expand into new customer segments and geographies. The Lead Underwriter will partner closely with global Risk, Finance, and Product teams to ensure underwriting practices are consistent, scalable, and aligned with internal risk policies.

In addition to managing a portfolio of higher-complexity reviews, this individual will help refine underwriting frameworks, improve decisioning processes, and strengthen operational controls. Over time, as the business grows, this role may evolve into a people leadership position with the opportunity to hire, mentor, and lead a local underwriting team.

What you will do

  • Serve as the on-the-ground underwriting lead in India, ensuring strong credit execution today while supporting future team expansion as the function scales.
  • Provide ongoing coaching and development opportunities to enhance the skills and capabilities of the team.
  • Learn, understand, and implement Rippling’s risk policies and procedures across all relevant products.
  • Perform customer-level credit reviews using both external and proprietary data sources.
  • Oversee customer escalations and respond to questions/requests from the Sales + Support functions.
  • Investigate and take action on high-risk customer credit situations, as needed.
  • Formulate and present credit recommendations to senior team members and credit committee.
  • Monitor portfolio-level performance against internal targets and required thresholds.
  • Work effectively with cross-functional partners to resolve credit issues.
  • Help drive projects related to improving efficiency and scalability of risk control practices.

What you will need

  • Strong financial analytics background: degree in Finance, Economics, or related field, progress towards CFA charter, or relevant on-the-job experience.
  • Deep expertise in financial statement analysis and understanding of commercial credit products
  • Minimum 6 years of credit risk experience, ideally related to SMB/MM commercial lending; working knowledge of financial and bank statements, with a minimum of 2 years in a managerial role.
  • Experience working cross-functionally with Sales and/or Support teams.
  • Highly organized with the ability to deliver on multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Ability to operate independently in a fast-paced environment and meet aggressive deadlines.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence across all levels of the organization.
