About the role


The Identity team's mission is to provide a single source of truth for authentication and security policy management for all users and applications, enabling customers to confidently scale their organization on Rippling.


We are seeking an exceptional Senior Staff Software Engineer to spearhead the evolution of our Identity and Access Management systems, a pivotal role in redefining authentication on a global scale at Rippling. This is a unique opportunity to be the architectural and technical lead, operating across the organization to implement the next generation of our Identity Platform, which will expand beyond employees to include vendors, candidates, and more, while ensuring the stability of our current systems. You will tackle complex data model challenges, contribute to product strategy, interact with customers, and drive us towards a future where Rippling Identity achieves parity with leading identity providers, establishing a foundational proof of personhood.

What you will do

  • Spearhead Global Authentication Overhaul: Lead the fundamental redesign and rebuild of Rippling's authentication systems to support worldwide operations. You will be responsible for designing and executing our new Identity Platform, ensuring a seamless transition from the current system without service interruption.
  • Drive Company-Wide Collaboration and Strategy: Your role will involve extensive interaction and leadership across diverse teams and product areas, demanding exceptional communication and influence. Your expertise will significantly shape the product direction and strategy for Identity services.
  • Redefine Digital Identity at Rippling: Be instrumental in evolving Rippling's core concept of an individual beyond an employee-centric model to a more comprehensive and foundational data model. This critical initiative will directly impact our business.
  • Provide Technical and Architectural Leadership: Serve as the lead architect and overall technical authority for the Identity team. You will help cultivate this team into a global organization operating with high operational excellence.

What you will need

  • Demonstrated mastery in designing, building, and scaling complex distributed systems, with a keen interest in applying this expertise to the Identity domain.
  • Proven ability to lead significant technical projects and guide engineering teams, effectively managing concurrent initiatives.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts clearly and collaborate effectively across the organization.
  • A deep understanding of security principles and practical experience in areas like cryptography, Identity and Access Management (IAM), or authentication/authorization protocols is a strong plus. Go proficiency is also beneficial.
  • 12+ years of professional software engineering experience.
  • Experience thriving in fast-paced, dynamic environments.
  • A passion for product-focused environments where customer impact is a primary driver.

A variety of factors are considered when determining someone’s compensation–including a candidate’s professional background, experience, and location. Final offer amounts may vary from the amounts listed below.

The pay range for this role is:

198,000 - 346,500 USD per year (US Tier 1)
