About The Role

Rippling is on a rapid growth trajectory, powered by an 800-strong engineering team that delivers innovative solutions to hundreds of thousands of users. At the heart of this team is the Observability group, responsible for critical systems like unified metrics dashboards, Sentry, Datadog, OpsGenie, and incident management tooling. This role is pivotal, with significant influence on Rippling’s business metrics, engineering roadmaps, and overall site reliability.

As a Staff Software Engineer on the Observability team, you will:


Lead Engineering Excellence: Architect, design, and develop robust software solutions using Python, Golang, and other cutting-edge technologies.

Drive Strategic Innovation: Lead the development of tools that enhance observability, providing crucial insights into system performance and influencing company-wide strategies.

Be the Domain Leader: Serve as the go-to specialist and mentor for over 800 engineers, championing best practices in observability and monitoring.

Collaborate & Influence: Build strong relationships with cross-functional teams to understand their challenges, influence their workflows, and drive improvements.

Scale with Vision: Play a key role in the strategic evolution of Rippling’s architecture, ensuring it scales efficiently with our growing business.


What We're Looking For


Experience & Leadership: A minimum of 8 years in backend or infrastructure engineering roles, with demonstrated leadership and strategic impact.

Technical Mastery: Deep expertise in observability tools and infrastructure systems, with the ability to influence and guide the technical direction.

Visionary Problem Solver: A forward-thinking strategist who can diagnose complex issues and devise innovative solutions.


Preferred Experience

  • Extensive experience with monitoring and alerting tools such as Datadog, Sentry, SumoLogic, Jaeger, or OpsGenie.
  • Proven success working with public cloud platforms like AWS or GCP.
  • Expertise in Python or Go, with a passion for building scalable systems.

Rippling highly values in-office collaboration. Employees living within 30 miles of an office are expected to work onsite three days a week with those living 30-49.9 miles away expected to be in the office one day a week. Employees living over 50 miles away are required to relocate within 30 miles of an office.  To enhance team cohesiveness, new employees are asked to work onsite three days a week for their first six months.


This role will receive a competitive salary + benefits + equity. The salary for US-based employees will be aligned with one of the ranges below based on location; see which tier applies to your location here.

A variety of factors are considered when determining someone’s compensation–including a candidate’s professional background, experience, and location. Final offer amounts may vary from the amounts listed below.

The pay range for this role is:

162,000 - 283,500 USD per year (US San Francisco Bay Area)
