Take onboarding, for example. With Rippling, you can hire a new employee anywhere in the world and set up their payroll, corporate card, computer, benefits, and even third-party apps like Slack and Microsoft 365—all within 90 seconds.

Based in San Francisco, CA, Rippling has raised $1.2B from the world’s top investors—including Kleiner Perkins, Founders Fund, Sequoia, Greenoaks, and Bedrock—and was named one of America's best startup employers by Forbes.

About the role

We are looking for an experienced Lead Counsel, Payments and Regulatory to lead our global payments platform in the United Kingdom and Europe. This is an exciting opportunity to build the legal and payments infrastructure to support our cutting-edge financial cloud product stack. You will work closely with our business and product teams to develop and execute on a wide range of payments-related initiatives, creating a first-in-kind platform that spans numerous industries. You will also help drive the compliance culture at Rippling across our product and operations. The ideal candidate loves working in a fast-paced environment, enjoys the regulatory challenge of innovative payments and banking systems, takes ownership over initiatives, has excellent analytical and communication skills, and fundamentally believes that lawyering need not be boring.

You will also serve as Chief Operating Officer (COO) of and lead the operations of Rippling Payments UK Ltd. (“RPay UK”), the wholly-owned subsidiary of Rippling seeking authorisation as an electronic money institution from the Financial Conduct Authority. In your capacity as COO of RPay UK, you will report directly to the Chief Executive Officer, providing key support to the ongoing regulatory operations of the business and oversight and ownership over the outsourcing framework and day-to-day operations of the business. You will help maximise the operational efficiency of the firm and will work to ensure the firm meets and exceeds both its strategic goals and regulatory requirements.

You Will:

  • Design and set up the legal infrastructure for payments around the globe, with a particular emphasis on the EMEA region

  • Act as a legal advisor to the business on our financial and payments products, including product counseling, regulator interactions, licensing, advertising, and other legal issues

  • Serve as the primary escalation point for our payment product teams, helping to embed legal and compliance values in all new product and business initiatives

  • As COO for Rpay UK:

    • Understand, track, and ensure compliance with payment regulations

    • Implement goal setting and key performance indicators (KPIs) for the operations and regulatory compliance of Rpay UK

    • Evaluate performance by monitoring and interpreting KPIs

    • Maximise resources to ensure ongoing business model viability

    • Manage payments regulatory interactions and reporting

You Have:

  • 6+ years experience in a payments legal role (money transmission, lending, banking as a service, or general fintech) and ideally 3+ years of experience in a senior role

  • A strong interest in payments and regulatory counseling and experience advising on legal issues in highly regulated industries

  • Demonstrated knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements in the payments space

  • Experience building trusted relationships and an ability to collaborate with senior stakeholders

  • Strong attention to detail, ability to work in a complex global organisational environment

  • Excellent communicator with the ability to break down complex requirements into easy-to-understand and practical advice

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to work with multiple deadlines under pressure

  • Entrepreneurial mindset, self-starting, and comfortable working in a highly dynamic environment
