Founded in 1977 in San Francisco’s Tenderloin District, the Southeast Asian Development Center, formerly Vietnamese Youth Development Center (VYDC), is a nonprofit organization dedicated to lifting children, youth, and families from Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam out of poverty. Youth Development Specialist


The Youth Development (YD) Specialist works collaboratively with and develops strong, nurturing relationships with youth, and facilitates small and large group workshops. They manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced and changing environment with attention to detail. They are flexible with varying schedules and activities during the week.


*This position works primarily with K-8th grade.


Position Title: Youth Development Specialist
Compensation: $22-26 hour DOE, Nonexempt; Full time, expected hours of work 37.5 hours per week

About the Youth Development Department

The Youth Development Department’s goal is to prepare youth in grades kindergarten through high school to be college and work ready. The department’s programs include daily out of school time program activities for K-12* graders focusing on tutoring, homework support, life skills and enriching social/cultural activities, teen leadership development activities, career exploration and job placements. 



Essential Duties and Responsibilities


Direct Client Support (75%) 

  • Facilitate implementation of after school and summer programs for youth, Monday – Friday. 
  • Plan and facilitate culturally relevant lesson plans, workshops, and activities focused on identity, leadership, academic enrichment, and health and wellness. 
  • Support youth in developing the skills they need to be successful in school and life. 
  • Promote a safe and positive learning environment. 
  • Supervise a minimum of 10 students daily with various activities on and off site. 
  • Support the recruitment of youth for after-school and summer programming to reach participation targets. 
  • Support parents and families to develop positive relationships with their children. 
  • Communicate and work collaboratively with Program Manager, department team members and community partners regularly. 
  • Identify participants needing additional social and emotional one-on-one support and update supervisor. 
  • Supports Program Manager with 1-on-1 Wellness and Academic Check-ins. 

Administrative & Departmental Support (25%) 

  • Assist with purchasing program materials and supplies. 
  • Assist with supervising volunteers and youth workers. 
  • Input data in Salesforce and DCYF portals weekly for daily attendance and enrollment, and update client files, records and activities. 
  • Attend agency events and meetings, team meetings and professional development trainings; attend trainings required by funder.
  • Assist with organizing and facilitating agency-wide events and activities. 
  • Collaborate with Health & Wellness Department on relevant youth-centric programming. 
  • Other duties assigned by supervisor.


Qualifications


Education:   

  • Bachelor's degree required

Required Skills and Experience: 

  • 1 or more years’ experience working with diverse youth required 
  • Able to supervise youth at ratio of 1 staff to 10 youth minimum 
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in facilitating groups 
  • Work effectively individually and in a team setting with or without supervision 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with both youth and adults
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 Office applications including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
    • Experience with data entry and CRM systems, preferably Salesforce
    • Familiarity with project management platforms and online communications platforms
    • Must have adaptability to adopt new software and technologies and participate in the development of new such systems 

Desired Skills and Experience: 

  • Bilingual in Vietnamese, Arabic, Cambodian, Laotian, or Thai language
  • Experience working with community organizations 
  • Knowledge of youth development principles/community service-learning 
  • Experience working with diverse youth from a range of backgrounds and circumstances

  • Solution-oriented mindset  
  • Able to work outside of typical business hours as needed   
  • Able to travel locally as needed   
  • Pass fingerprinting background check and TB clearance before start date
