Founded in 1977 in San Francisco’s Tenderloin District, the Southeast Asian Development Center, formerly Vietnamese Youth Development Center (VYDC), is a nonprofit organization dedicated to lifting children, youth, and families from Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam out of poverty. Our services are structured around providing low income and vulnerable Southeast Asian Americans with basic needs and skills critical to building successful futures. The Bilingual Community Navigator supports limited-English-speaking community members with accessing basic life needs, language support, and navigating community, government, and social services. They also provide in-person, telephone, and/or remote services, monitor client progress, communicate and follow up with referrals to providers, community resources, and supportive services. The Bilingual Community Navigator reports to the Service Navigation Program Manager.
The ideal candidate will be skilled in working with the Southeast Asian and Arabic-speaking community and has a deep understanding of the community’s experiences and needs. They will be detail-orientated and be able to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced and changing environment. They must be flexible with varying schedules and activities during the week. Position may require traveling within city limits.
About Service Navigation: The objective is to support Southeast Asian adults and families in meeting basic needs, achieving stable housing, and gaining economic independence. Project activities include daily drop-in translation services for limited English-speaking Khmer, Lao, Thai, and Vietnamese clients to help navigate basic needs, health and life resources, and public benefits; assistance with housing applications and counseling; job placement and enrollment in vocational or accredited career programs; weekly English language classes to improve proficiency; and support with U.S. citizenship preparation, applications and testing.
Position Title: Bilingual Community Navigator (English/Arabic, Khmer, Lao, Thai, Vietnamese)
Compensation: $26.00-29.00 hour DOE, Nonexempt; Part Time, expected hours of work up to 20 hours per week
