Work Location: Concord, CA Fully Onsite, no remote

Employment Details: Full Time, Exempt

Compensation: $135k - 166k/year


About the role: Reporting to the CFO, the Controller will be responsible for oversight of all accounting and reporting activities. This position will lead all day-to-day accounting operations of a budget of $30 million and supervise the team with functional responsibility over accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and grants administration. The Controller will ensure that SHELTER, Inc. and its affiliates have the systems and procedures in place to support effective program management and conduct flawless audits. The Controller will work closely with program and administrative staff to support proper financial accounting.


What you’ll do:

Finance and Accounting

  • Direct and enhance the monthly close process, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timely completion of all accounting activities.
  • Review and approve journal entries and account reconciliations.
  • Oversee and manage all aspects of the general ledger, including fixed assets and property accounting.
  • Prepare timely and accurate financial statements and assist with other reporting as needed.
  • Ensure all financial reporting adheres to GAAP while proactively evolving processes to support organizational growth and scalability.
  • Maintain internal controls and safeguards for assets, revenue, expenses, and program budgets.
  • Coordinate and oversee audit activity to facilitate efficient audits by providing required schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation and timely resolving any open items or findings.
  • Function as a trusted partner and strategic advisor to the Program and Property teams, providing accounting expertise to enable informed business decisions..
  • Prepare financial reporting materials for government, corporate, and foundation grants.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) and other accounting documentation to ensure consistency and compliance across the organization.
  • Drive continuous improvement of accounting processes to increase efficiency, scalability, and reliability

  • Lead, mentor, and inspire a high-performing accounting team, promoting ownership, accountability, continuous improvement, and strong internal customer focus.
  • Build and scale teams to meet the evolving needs of a growing, complex organization.
  • Create and promote a positive and supportive work environment.

What you’ll bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field. Master of Business Administration or CPA is highly desired
  • 3+ years' experience as a Controller within the nonprofit sector with a successful track record in nonprofit grants management, compliance, and reporting of government, corporate and foundation grants.
  • 8+ Years' experience in accounting. Proven experience as an accounting manager, senior accounting manager or in similar roles.
  • Solid experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and accounting for investments.
  • Strong technical knowledge of U.S. GAAP and financial reporting
  • Proficient using large ERP systems, tools (Sage Intacct highly desirable) and advanced Excel capabilities to enhance accounting processes, reporting, and analytics in large and dynamic organization.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to clearly present financial information.
  • Ability/willingness to work flexible hours.

Position Requirements:

  • Must successfully pass a criminal background check and credit check
  • Must provide TB test clearance
