How we will deliver success together:
As a Senior Data Scientist, you will be a strategic leader in driving our data product strategy and establishing best practices across the organization. You will leverage deep analytical expertise and technical leadership to transform complex business challenges into innovative, scalable data solutions. You will lead the discovery and development of high-impact data products, working closely with Product, Engineering, and Business leadership to define roadmaps and drive company-wide initiatives. Your strategic thinking and mentorship will elevate the capabilities of partner teams and shape the direction of our data science practice.
You excel at navigating ambiguity and complexity, defining strategic priorities, and leading projects that span multiple teams and business areas. Your proven ability to independently architect solutions, influence stakeholders at all levels, and deliver measurable business impact will be critical to your success. As a senior member of the team, you will mentor junior data scientists and contribute to building a world-class data science culture.
Shipping & handling responsibilities
- Strategic Product Research: Lead comprehensive analyses of shipping data to identify and prioritize high-value opportunities for new product features and strategic initiatives. Drive deep investigations into carrier performance, delivery optimization, cost reduction strategies, and user behavior patterns to shape product strategy. Design and execute sophisticated analytical frameworks to assess market opportunities, competitive positioning, and product-market fit. Own the end-to-end research process, from hypothesis generation to implementation roadmap, and effectively communicate strategic recommendations to leadership.
- Machine Learning Development: Develop advanced machine learning prototypes and proof-of-concepts that validate new features and establish technical feasibility, such as intelligent routing algorithms, dynamic pricing models, or predictive analytics capabilities. Create well-documented, production-ready code and models that can be seamlessly handed off to engineering teams for scaling and deployment.
- Statistical Analysis: Design A/B testing and other experimental frameworks by applying inferential statistical techniques to measure the impact of product changes. Interpret results with statistical rigor, ensuring confidence in findings. Provide recommendations based on insights, helping stakeholders make informed decisions on product optimizations and new initiatives.
- Technical Leadership & Mentorship: Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior and mid-level data scientists, fostering their professional growth and analytical capabilities. Lead cross-functional initiatives that require coordination across Data Science, Engineering, Product, and Business teams. Contribute to the development of data science best practices, tools, and frameworks that enhance team productivity and impact. Champion data-driven culture and literacy across the organization through training, knowledge sharing, and stakeholder engagement.
- Thought Leadership & Communication: Communicate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences, adapting your message for both technical and executive stakeholders. Drive alignment across multiple teams and departments on analytical approaches, success metrics, and strategic priorities. Represent the data science team in strategic planning sessions and contribute to company-wide initiatives and objectives.
Your shipping requirements
- 6+ years of experience in data science, analytics, or related roles with demonstrated progression of responsibility and impact.
- Master's degree or PhD in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering, or related quantitative field preferred. A bachelor's degree with exceptional experience will be considered.
- Advanced proficiency in Python for data analysis, machine learning, and statistical modeling.
- Strong proficiency in SQL for querying and manipulating large datasets.
- Demonstrated experience translating ambiguous business challenges into structured analytical frameworks and actionable solutions.
- Track record translating analysis into shipped product development, operational workflows, or data science initiatives.
- Strategic thinking and ability to balance short-term deliverables with long-term vision.
- Practical application of data wrangling, data cleaning, and exploratory data analysis (EDA).
- Understanding of statistical methods and machine learning techniques to extract deeper insights from data.
- Willingness to take on a wide range of tasks, big or small, stepping in wherever needed drive business success.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Excellent communication skills—able to present findings to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Experience with Databricks and lakehouse patterns (e.g., Spark, MLflow).
- Experience in shipping logistics or carrier operations.
- Experience setting team-wide standards (metrics governance, experimentation playbooks, model readiness criteria).

Compensation
Our Compensation Shippolicy:
We believe compensation is a custom experience and are commited to fair and equitable compensation practices. The standard base pay range for this role is min is $156k to a max $212k annual salary (we tend to anchor our offers at the mid point $184k). Since we are focused on hiring Shippos Everywhere, we have 2 US pay ranges, a standard compensation range for the majority of the US and a standard +1 compensation range for those who live in areas where the cost of labor is higher, such as NYC and California.
The actual base pay is dependent upon many factors, such as: financial budgets, work experience, training, transferable skills, business needs, and market value. The base pay salary ranges are subject to change and may be modified in the future. Total compensation for this role will include, equity, medical, dental, vision and other benefits noted in our Shippos “package” section.

Shippos in the wild:
Our people, much like the packages we help ship, are all over the world. This means, through our remote-first program, “Shippos Everywhere”, our roles can be based anywhere in the US with the exception of Delaware, Nevada, Ohio, Oregon, Hawaii, New Mexico and West Virginia and many roles can be based internationally.
For locations outside of the US and Ireland, the employment contracts are powered by Remote.com (all Shippo perks still apply - including equity!). What we want to emphasize is that you can be successful at Shippo regardless of location.
