About the role

The Task Force Specialist is a deployable field position responsible for supporting mission-specific operations under the direction of a Task Force Leader during emergency response and recovery efforts. This role may include assisting with logistics coordination, debris monitoring, shelter support, damage assessments, or other functional assignments based on incident needs. Operating within the Incident Command System (ICS), the Task Force Specialist carries out tactical objectives, adheres to safety and accountability protocols, and maintains situational awareness in dynamic environments. In blue-sky conditions, the Specialist may also participate in training, readiness activities, and assist with onboarding and mentoring of new personnel to ensure team preparedness for future deployments.


Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out assigned operational tasks in support of incident objectives under the supervision of the Task Force Leader
  • Assist with functions such as logistics, shelter operations, debris monitoring, damage assessments, or other mission-specific assignments
  • Maintain accountability for assigned equipment and follow established safety protocols in all environments
  • Complete field documentation, data collection forms, and activity reports as directed
  • Participate in daily briefings, debriefings, and shift transitions to ensure situational awareness and continuity of operations
  • Communicate effectively with fellow team members and supervisors to relay updates, issues, or resource needs
  • Respond flexibly to changing assignments or operational priorities based on evolving incident conditions
  • Support onboarding and field mentoring of new or less experienced personnel during deployments
  • Participate in training exercises, drills, and readiness activities during non-emergency (blue-sky) operations
  • Represent the organization professionally while interacting with public officials, partners, and community members in the field

Qualifications

  • Completion of required ICS training (ICS-100, ICS-200, ICS-300; ICS-400 recommended; IS-700, IS-800) within 90 days of employment.
  • Prior experience or training in emergency management, disaster response, or related field preferred
  • Familiarity with the Incident Command System (ICS) and ability to operate within a structured chain of command
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and adapt to evolving field conditions during high-stress operations
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Physically capable of working in austere or hazardous environments for extended periods
  • Willingness to deploy on short notice for extended durations, including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Basic proficiency in completing field documentation and maintaining situational awareness
  • Demonstrated reliability, accountability, and commitment to safety and operational integrity
  • Ability to receive and apply just-in-time training relevant to the specific mission or assignment
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience within the fields of Emergency Management, Law Enforcement, Emergency Medical Service or Fire Service
  • Strong understanding of the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and Incident Command System (ICS) protocols. 

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with managing large-scale incidents or disasters that include multiple jurisdictions.
  • Previous experience in military, public safety, emergency management, emergency medical, fire service or related sectors.
  • Knowledge of federal and state emergency response regulations.
  • Experience working in Logistics, Debris Management, Sheltering, or Communications.
  • Knowledge of FEMA reimbursement policies and procedures.
  • Advanced problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Multilingual proficiency an advantage, particularly in Spanish and Haitian Creole

 

Additional Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years old.  
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States. 
  • Must pass a background check upon offer of employment.  
  • Must be willing and able to travel to various work sites as needed. 
  • Must be willing and able to work long hours and adapt to changing environments.
