Position Title: Procurement Manager
Position Location: Remote – work virtually from anywhere in the United States
JOB SUMMARY
The Procurement Manager is responsible for establishing, leading, and scaling a national procurement function in support of Smart Tech Contracting’s building automation, controls, and mission-critical construction projects.
This role is execution-oriented and strategic, with a primary focus on contracting procurement, material sourcing, vendor partnerships, logistics coordination, and schedule-driven problem solving. The Procurement Manager will build procurement processes from the ground up, create national sourcing strategies, and ensure materials and subcontracted services are aligned with aggressive project schedules.
Success in this role requires a strong understanding of construction procurement, vendor negotiation, supply chain risk mitigation, and the ability to identify alternative sourcing paths when materials, labor, or lead times do not meet project requirements.
The Procurement Manager reports to the Smart Tech Contracting Business Leader and works closely with project management, estimating, engineering, and operations leadership.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Procurement Strategy and Group Development (40%)
- Establish and scale a centralized procurement function for Smart Tech Contracting.
- Develop procurement standards, workflows, and sourcing strategies to support national project execution.
- Identify, evaluate, and onboard subcontractors, suppliers, manufacturers, and service partners across multiple regions.
- Build and manage a national vendor and subcontractor database with performance tracking.
- Develop strategic supplier and partner relationships to improve cost, reliability, and schedule performance.
- Proactively identify alternative sourcing options to mitigate supply chain risk.
- Create procurement playbooks aligned with speed-to-market project demands.
Contracting Procurement and Sourcing (30%)
- Lead sourcing and procurement of materials, equipment, and subcontracted services for construction and controls projects.
- Negotiate pricing, terms, lead times, and service commitments with vendors and subcontractors.
- Support contract reviews related to procurement scope and commercial terms.
- Partner with project teams to ensure procurement aligns with construction sequencing and milestones.
- Identify alternate products, suppliers, or delivery methods when original plans threaten schedule or cost targets.
- Support estimating and preconstruction teams with market intelligence on pricing and availability.
Material Tracking, Logistics, and Schedule Support (20%)
- Implement material tracking processes to ensure visibility from order placement through delivery.
- Monitor lead times, production schedules, and delivery commitments across active projects.
- Identify schedule conflicts early and execute mitigation plans.
- Coordinate with project managers to align procurement timing with field execution.
- Establish reporting dashboards to track procurement status, risks, and action items.
Process Improvement and Strategic Partnerships (10%)
- Continuously improve procurement processes to increase speed, transparency, and cost control.
- Develop national supplier agreements and preferred partner programs.
- Collaborate with leadership to implement procurement tracking tools and reporting systems.
- Identify opportunities to leverage partnerships for scalability and long-term growth.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- Strong knowledge of construction procurement, sourcing, and subcontracting practices.
- Proven experience building or leading a procurement function.
- Strong understanding of contracts, subcontracts, and commercial terms.
- Experience supporting fast-paced construction or mission-critical environments.
- Ability to manage vendors, suppliers, and subcontractors across multiple projects simultaneously.
- Strong negotiation and relationship-building skills.
- Experience tracking materials, lead times, and logistics in support of construction schedules.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office including Excel, Word, Outlook, and Teams, along with procurement tracking tools.
- Ability to leverage AI and emerging technologies to improve procurement workflows and decision-making.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Self-directed and able to operate effectively in a fully remote environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and adapt quickly to changing project conditions.
TRAVEL / RELOCATION REQUIREMENTS
- Up to 15% travel may be required, including visits to project sites, vendor facilities, and partner meetings.
- Effective May 7, 2025, and in accordance with U.S. federal regulations for domestic air travel, a valid REAL ID (or an acceptable alternative, such as a passport) is required for travel associated with this position.
- Travel may involve transportation by car or plane depending on the destination and nature of the business need.
- Travel is defined as physically leaving home on behalf of business activities including but not limited to client sites, meetings with other employees, meetings for business development purposes, running errands on behalf of the business, attending industry conferences, etc.
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Business, Construction Management, or a related field preferred, or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of 8 years of procurement or sourcing experience in construction, building automation, controls, or mission-critical environments.
- Experience working with subcontractors, manufacturers, and material suppliers in a construction setting.
