Facilities Staffer – HVAC Specialist

Facilities Staffer – HVAC Specialist

Reports to: Facilities Manager and Director of Facilities (or Partner)

Compensation: $30–45 an hour, non-exempt position. Specific starting wages are dependent on location and experience.

Full Description Summary

Sports Basement seeks to self-perform many of the tasks needed to keep our buildings operational. This includes the construction of fixtures, repair of fixtures, and general maintenance of our facilities. This role requires a working knowledge of hand tools and power tools, and the proper and safe use of these tools in both workshop environments and in public locations like our retail sales floors.

In addition to fixture and general maintenance work, this role performs routine preventative maintenance on our HVAC equipment, such as replacing filters and belts, clearing condensate drains, and inspecting rooftop units. This is not a dedicated HVAC position and does not perform refrigerant handling or other licensed trade work — that work is handled by outside contractors. We are looking for a facilities generalist who brings hands-on HVAC preventative-maintenance experience to a varied, multi-system role.

Our Facilities Staffer understands how to work with the various raw materials used in creating and repairing Sports Basement’s trade fixtures, and is always mindful of public safety. Working with raw materials will at times include loading and unloading by hand or with the aid of material handling equipment such as forklifts and trucks. These materials can be heavy — Facilities Staffers must be able to lift and move a single sheet of 5/8″ plywood or a 50 lb bag of concrete by hand.

Facilities Staffers must know the limits of their own skills and seek help or direction whenever a task is beyond their abilities. Facilities Staffers may be asked to travel to any Sports Basement location to perform construction, repair, or maintenance tasks. Depending on the needs of the company, other duties may be assigned from time to time.

What you’ll do

Facilities Duties and Operations

  • Build Sports Basement’s standard trade fixtures in our Bryant Street and San Ramon workshops, demonstrating working knowledge of the materials and methods required to produce them to spec.
  • Repair existing fixtures and perform general maintenance work at any Sports Basement location, as assigned by the Facilities Manager.
  • Complete preventative or scheduled maintenance tasks when assigned. Facilities Staffers are not expected to seek out this work independently — assignments come from the Facilities Manager.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance on HVAC equipment as assigned, including air filter replacement, belt replacement, condensate drain clearing, and visual inspection of rooftop and packaged units. Execute the preventative maintenance schedule as assigned by the Facilities Manager, and keep accurate records of the maintenance performed
  • Escalate any HVAC work beyond routine maintenance — including refrigerant handling, electrical repair, or controls programming — to the Facilities Manager for assignment to a licensed contractor. Refrigerant work is performed only by appropriately licensed personnel and is never performed in-house.
  • Perform construction, repair, and maintenance tasks in both workshop environments and in public locations such as our retail sales floors, always working in a manner that prioritizes the safety of customers and staff.
  • Use hand tools and power tools safely and correctly. Know the limits of your own skills and stop, ask for help, or escalate to the Facilities Manager when a task is beyond your ability.
  • Load, unload, and handle raw materials by hand or with the aid of material handling equipment, including forklifts and trucks. Must be able to lift and move a single sheet of 5/8″ plywood or a 50 lb bag of concrete by hand.
  • Travel to any Sports Basement store to perform construction, repair, or maintenance work. A valid Class C license is required; in most cases, Staffers will use their own vehicle, with mileage reimbursement provided when appropriate.
  • Take direction and work assignments from the Facilities Manager. Store-level facilities requests are routed from store General Managers to the Facilities Manager, who then assigns the work — Facilities Staffers do not take assignments directly from store GMs.
  • Available to perform work outside standard weekday hours when requested by the Facilities Manager. After-hours and weekend assignments are not a regular part of the role but may be needed when work cannot be performed during normal store operating hours.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in workshops and at any job site.

Apply Core Values

  • Implement company core values, policies, procedures, and safety measures.
  • Demonstrate the SB value “OK is not OK” in all aspects of your role.
  • Demonstrate good judgment in all situations.
  • Remain positive in challenging situations and offer creative solutions to problems.
  • Effectively communicate, both written and verbally, with the Facilities Manager, Director of Facilities, store teams, and any other levels of the business as needed.

Staff Experience

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in workshops, at job sites, and on any sales floor where work is being performed — for both customers and Sports Basement staff.
  • Perform tasks with a positive attitude and effectively communicate problems or issues to the Facilities Manager as they come up.
  • Efficiently prioritize and execute assigned daily tasks and projects to meet deadlines, working independently or as part of the Facilities team.
  • Willing to learn new tools, techniques, and skills, and contribute ideas that improve how the Facilities team operates.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience in construction, fabrication, facilities, maintenance, or a related trade.
  • Hands-on commercial HVAC preventative-maintenance experience. Demonstrated experience performing routine preventative maintenance and basic troubleshooting on commercial HVAC systems — including rooftop packaged units, split systems, air filters, belts, condensate systems, and thermostats. No HVAC license or EPA refrigerant certification is required, as refrigerant handling and other licensed work is performed by outside contractors.
  • Working knowledge of hand tools and power tools, and the ability to use them safely in both workshop environments and public-facing locations such as our retail sales floors.
  • Working knowledge of the raw materials used to build and repair standard Sports Basement trade fixtures, and the ability to demonstrate how to build them to spec.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and recognize the limits of your own skills — knowing when to stop a task and seek direction or assistance from the Facilities Manager.
  • Valid Class C driver’s license required, with a clean driving record. In most cases, Facilities Staffers use their own vehicle when traveling between Sports Basement locations, with mileage reimbursement provided when appropriate. [HR to refine language on mileage reimbursement.]
  • Ability to operate, or willingness to learn to operate, material handling equipment including forklifts, pallet jacks, scissor lifts, boom lifts, lift gates, and trucks.
  • Must be able to lift and move heavy materials by hand, including a single sheet of 5/8″ plywood or a 50 lb bag of concrete. Position requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing ladders, and working with tools for extended periods. Must have the physical, visual, and auditory ability to perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Self-starter with strong attention to detail, time management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the Facilities Manager, Director of Facilities, and store teams across Sports Basement.
  • Flexibility and adaptability — daily assignments may change based on the needs of the company.
  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment.
  • The standard schedule is Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM. After-hours or weekend work is not a regular part of this role. As an hourly, non-exempt position, any shift in scheduled hours requires advance notice from the Facilities Manager. Not required to work Thanksgiving or Christmas.
  • Internal Candidates: Awareness of business tools pertinent to your role, including but not limited to Google Docs and any work-order or facilities management systems Sports Basement uses (training available).
