Store Associate

South Puget Sound Habitat for Humanity is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International focused on providing affordable housing solutions in Thurston and Lewis counties. We believe that every person, no matter who they are, deserves a decent place to live. Our work includes building new, energy-efficient homes, preparing households for homeownership, guaranteeing affordable mortgages to homebuyers, performing critical housing repairs, and running two successful resale stores. It is an exciting time at South Puget Sound Habitat as our immediate goals for the future include three new developments and hundreds of repair projects, drastically outpacing our past production—and we are working to scale our operations to meet these goals.  

 


POSITION SUMMARY


The Store Associate plays a vital role in Store operations with a strong focus on creating a rewarding experience for customers, donors, and volunteers. Sales Associates effectively utilize the point of sales system, give excellent customer service, and insure volunteer engagement. They work alongside volunteers and other employees, answering donor/customer questions in regards to pricing, homeownership, volunteering, and current projects.

You enjoy a fast-paced work environment and a wide verity of tasks during a typical work day. You like to be on your feet and moving around the majority of your time at work.  

 

RESPONSIBILITIES


Key Responsibility: Customer Service (40%)

The Store Associate works closely with customers to provide a rewarding shopping and donation experience. Duties generally include:

  • Greet customers and donors entering the area, ensuring they receive outstanding service by providing a friendly environment
  • Collaborate with other team members to keep the sales floor area clean and organized
  • Answer telephone and assist callers in a professional and courteous manner
  • Explain store policy to customers including sold/hold policy
  • Use of radio communication between staff and volunteers

Key Responsibility: Point of Sale (30%)

The Store Associate is the primary cashier during their scheduled time at the register. Duties generally include:

  • Receive payment by cash, credit cards, or automatic debits
  • Assist loading customer purchases using proper safety practices and equipment
  • Maintain a high level of cash management for accuracy 

Key Responsibility: Pricing and Staging (15%)

The Store Associate will take in donation from customer and assist in pricing and staging the product on the appropriate location on the sales floor. Duties generally include:

  • Intake appropriate donations answering customer/donor questions, and provide information on procedures and accepted items
  • Stock merchandise paying attention to presentation, correct department placement, marking prices on shelves and items
  • Assist in maintaining the back stock room and setting up merchandise displays on the sales floor
  • Use of internet to research donated merchandise to insure fair and appropriate pricing

Key Responsibility: Volunteer Engagement (10%)

  • Establish and maintain positive interpersonal relationships with volunteers in the store, driving engagement to build a rewarding store experience

Key Responsibility: Leadership, Teamwork, and Inclusivity (5%)

All team members are responsible for contributing to overall organizational health through positive collaboration, leadership, personal integrity, and a commitment to equity and inclusion. Responsibilities generally include:

  • Maintain a “team first” outlook, supporting the success of the team and the mission in attitude, ideas, and actions; lead by example and with active, creative input for growing and improving the organization.
  • Meet and endorse organization standards for record keeping and information sharing.
  • Contribute to organization events, helping as necessary with set up/take down, management, networking, various tasks, etc.
  • Participate in intentional learning efforts, including events relating to understanding institutional racism and building cultural competency.

 

REQUIREMENTS


Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Retail/ customer service experience is a plus, but not required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Ability to accurately and safely operate store equipment such as computers, pallet jacks, etc
  • Strong relationship building skills with an ability work constructively with a variety of people
  • Able to read, count, write and communicate effectively ensuring correct completion of all documentation
  • Must be able to organize, plan and prioritize work to completion
  • Ability to pass a background and reference check
  • Commitment to the South Puget Sound Habitat mission and core values

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Experience with operating a POS system
  • Cash handling experience

DETAILS


  • Reports to: Store Manager
  • Supervises: None
  • Hours: 18-24 hours per week. Store hours are from 10 am – 6 pm, 7 days a week
  • Compensation: Hourly: Position range: $16.66-$20.35; expected hire range: $17.00-$17.50
  • FLSA Status: This position is not exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA); it earns overtime for additional time worked
  • Environment: This position will be based in our Store located at 400 Cooper Point Rd SW in Olympia. Work in generally indoors, but requires going outside for load outs and donations. It can be reached by car or public transit. The building is accessible.
  • Conditions: This position will be regularly required to use a computer keyboard and screen, a tablet for point of sale transactions, communicate with others, reach with arms and hands, carry up to 50LB, be on your feet the majority of the work day.
  • Training: This successful candidate will be onboarded and initially trained through a combination of in-person, online, and written trainings; they are expected to take the initiative to review materials as needed and seek understanding of new developments in order to perform their responsibilities.
