Stand.earth is hiring a Climate Organizer to play a key role in securing a commitment from the Canadian federal government to phasing out thermal coal exports. This position, which is a one year fixed-term role based in Vancouver BC, will sit inside our Canada Oil & Gas campaign team and carry out work on our coal campaign in partnership with Ecojustice, along with other oil and gas infrastructure organizing work as needed.

The Position

This position will play a key role in building and mobilizing a local organizing network to secure a clear and binding commitment from the federal government to phase out Canada’s thermal coal exports by 2030.

The Climate Organizer will support and empower volunteers, partner organizations, and impacted communities using effective organizing strategies, digital tools, training, and relationship-building. This role will focus on federal advocacy, public pressure, and coalition-based organizing to advance climate justice and protect communities impacted by coal transportation, and processing, for exporting. This position will also support the Canada Oil and Gas team on additional organizing responsibilities consistent with achieving its campaign goals.

This is a 1-year full-time fixed term position, with the possibility of a 1-year extension subject to campaign needs and performance. The starting salary range for the position is $67,275 to $87,750 CAD. The location for this position is fully remote and the candidate must reside in Greater Vancouver, British Columbia. For this position, candidates will be required to attend in-person organizing, meetings, and actions in the Vancouver area and other key locations in Southern British Columbia as needed.

Position Responsibilities

• Develop and implement a decentralized organizing strategy to build a strong, inclusive, and effective local campaign focused on ending Canada’s thermal coal exports.
• Recruit, train, and support volunteers and grassroots leaders to engage in federal advocacy, including meetings with Members of Parliament, Ministers, and relevant partners.
• Coordinate volunteer activities, such as: lobby days, days of action, public mobilizations, and public town halls in support of federal policy change.
• Organize and prepare volunteers to participate in public consultations, parliamentary processes, media moments, and other federal decision-making opportunities.
• Build and maintain an engaged volunteer organizing network in the Greater Vancouver area, with a particular focus on communities affected by coal transport, and port expansion.
• Seek opportunities to deepen organizing impact through leadership development, team-building, coaching, and ongoing skills training.
• Design and manage organizing systems using digital tools to recruit, track, schedule, and support volunteers while maintaining strong relationships with volunteer leaders.
• Support coalition-building and coordination with environmental organizations, Indigenous Nations, labor unions, faith-based groups, and social justice organizations. Experience working in solidarity with Indigenous communities and respecting Indigenous leadership is an asset.
• Draft and edit organizing materials, including training guides, toolkits, presentations, emails, text scripts, talking points, and social media content to maximize public and political impact.
• Contribute to campaign strategy by tracking federal policy developments related to coal, climate, trade, and energy transition.
• Coordinate with Stand.earth and Ecojustice teams on implementation of campaign strategy.

Required Skills

• At least 2 years of experience in field, distributed, or digital organizing on political, environmental, or social justice campaigns.
• Experience recruiting, training, and supporting volunteers, including facilitation, coaching, one-on-one meetings, and leadership development.
• Demonstrated commitment to equity, racial justice, Indigenous rights, and working in solidarity with impacted communities.
• Strong oral and written communication skills, including storytelling, message development, and the ability to tailor communications to diverse audiences.
• Passion for climate justice and environmental protection, with a strong interest in influencing federal government policy.
• Proven project management skills, including setting goals, managing timelines, and coordinating multiple workstreams.
• Experience working in coalitions with multiple stakeholders, including frontline, labor, and Indigenous partners.
• Comfortable attending in-person organizing, meetings, and actions, and working in a collaborative environment that values creativity, strategy, and accountability.
• Availability to work occasional evenings and weekends for volunteer meetings and events.
• Ability to travel across Metro Vancouver to participate in in-person meetings with team members, volunteers, and other campaign stakeholders.
• Digitally savvy and comfortable learning and using organizing and communications tools such as CRMs, email platforms, and volunteer management systems.
• Familiarity with Canadian federal policy-making processes, including experience engaging with elected officials, submitting public comments, or tracking legislation and regulations.

Desired, by not required

• Deep experience in distributed or network-based organizing and a strong understanding of best practices.
• Knowledge of the coal industry, fossil fuel export infrastructure, or climate policy.
• Understanding of federal climate, trade, and energy policy, including key ministries and decision-makers.
• Experience managing large volunteer lists or databases.
• Existing relationships with grassroots organizations, labor unions, Indigenous-led organizations, or federal policymakers in British Columbia.
• Proficiency with digital campaigning and organizing tools.
