About the role

The Estimator 2 prepares accurate cost estimates and bid documents for construction projects. This role performs quantity takeoffs, develops project costs, solicits subcontractor and vendor pricing, and supports bid preparation while continuing to build estimating knowledge and technical expertise.

What you'll do

Construction Knowledge

  • Understand SEC core construction activities.
  • Interpret plans, specifications, and bid documents.
  • Apply pay items, construction methods, and traffic control requirements.
  • Understand basic contract provisions.
  • Utilize NJIFs, Project Summaries, and phase coding.

Estimation & Cost Analysis

  • Perform accurate quantity takeoffs.
  • Convert plans and specifications into labor, material, and equipment costs.
  • Prepare routine estimates.
  • Understand crew sizes and production rates.
  • Review estimates using the B2W Estimate Check Wizard.

Project Planning & Bid Strategy

  • Prepare RFQs for subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Organize bid documents and support bid submissions.
  • Assist senior estimators with pricing and bid strategy.
  • Prepare basic change orders and cost breakdowns.

Software & Tools

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Use B2W Estimating and Bluebeam.
  • Complete basic Vista budget uploads.

Risk Management & Problem Solving

  • Identify scope gaps and project risks.
  • Evaluate equipment, materials, and subcontractor needs.
  • Seek clarification on unclear project requirements.
  • Escalate issues requiring additional technical guidance.

Professionalism & Self-Management

  • Communicate effectively with internal teams and external partners.
  • Organize workload to meet bid deadlines.
  • Maintain accurate project files.
  • Manage priorities and follow through on commitments.
  • Utilize subject matter experts when appropriate.

Qualifications

  • 2–4 years of construction estimating or related experience.
  • Working knowledge of construction plans, specifications, and estimating principles.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Experience with B2W, Bluebeam, Vista, and Microsoft Office preferred.
